Ch. 661

powers may be exercised in incorporated cities, or towns,
but only under the discretion and control of the chief of
the police force of the city or town. All fire police, when
on such duty, and when wearing a badge of authority, shall
be deemed to be performing the duties of their office.

SECTION 3. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect July 1, 1979.

CHAPTER 662

(House Bill 1660)

AN ACT concerning

Anne Arundel County — Sheriff's Office

FOR the purpose of altering the amount of money annually
received by the Sheriff of Anne Arundel County and
providing for additional positions for deputy sheriff;
and generally relating to the Sheriff's office in Anne
Arundel County.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

Article — Courts and Judicial Proceedings

Section 2-309 (c)

Annotated Code of Maryland

(1974 Volume and 1978 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That section(s) of the Annotated Code of Maryland
be repealed, amended, or enacted to read as follows:

Article — Courts and Judicial Proceedings

2-309.

(c) (1) The Sheriff of Anne Arundel County shall
receive a salary of $20,000- [In addition to his salary,
the Sheriff shall receive $190,500 annually to be used for
salaries of deputies and any necessary clerical assistants;
as of July 1, 1976, $24,000 of this shall be for three new
deputy sheriff positions at $8,000 each.

(2) The Sheriff of Anne Arundel County shall
appoint not less than 14 deputies, and any clerical
assistants required by the duties of the office. In case of
emergency, the Sheriff may temporarily deputize any
able—bodied citizen to assist him in carrying out the duties
