3008                                     JOINT RESOLUTIONS

169 Conduit Street, Annapolis, Maryland 21401.

*Not signed by the Acting Governor.

No. 60*

(House Joint Resolution 84)

A House Joint Resolution concerning

Establishment of a School of Veterinary Medicine

FOR the purpose of requesting that there be a study of the
feasibility of establishing a school of veterinary
medicine as a branch of the University of Maryland.

The State of Maryland does not have a school of
veterinary medicine. This works a great hardship both on
those who wish to become veterinarians and those who need
their services. The residents of Maryland who seek a career
in this field are forced to go outside of this State for
their education. They are thus encouraged to practice their
profession outside of this State.

An even greater detriment is suffered by Maryland's
livestock breeders. They play an important part in the
economy of this State, yet the health of their animals is
left to the care of a small number of overworked individuals
who have received their training outside of Maryland.

As a result, there is great interest and concern for
the establishment of a school of veterinary medicine as a
branch of the University of Maryland; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
Commissioner of Higher Education is requested to create a
commission to study the feasibility of establishing a school
of veterinary medicine as a branch of the University of
Maryland. Experts in all related fields should be appointed
to the commission. In conducting the feasibility study, the
Commissioner shall give due consideration to all current

studies completed on veterinary medicine both within and

without the State. The General Assembly should receive a
report by January 1, 1979, on the necessity and practicality
of such a school as well as the most practical locations for
it within the State; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to Dr.
Sheldon Knorr, Commissioner of Higher Education, Jeffrey
Building, 16 Francis Street, Annapolis, Maryland 21401.

*Not signed by the Acting Governor.
