JOINT RESOLUTIONS
A House Joint Resolution concerning
Maryland Statewide Medical Education and Training
System — Area Health Education Centers
FOR the purpose of requesting the Governor to allocate
certain funds in the budget for fiscal year 1980 for
the operation of the Cumberland Area Health Education
Center and the University of Maryland at Baltimore Area
health education centers and to plan two additional
centers.
WHEREAS, In 1976 the General Assembly enacted House
Bill 38, which established the Maryland Statewide Medical
Education and Training System; and
WHEREAS, This program will establish centers for
training in comprehensive medical care, and will provide for
the training of additional numbers of allied health care
professionals, thus attracting an increased number of
practicing physicians to the area and encouraging the
development of additional health care facilities; and
WHEREAS, The Area Health Education Center in Cumberland
will be the first program of its kind in the area, and will
provide a vital and beneficial service for the citizens of
this State; and
WHEREAS, For this program to compete successfully for
federal funds, assurance of fiscal support from the State
government is needed; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
Governor is requested to include in the budget for fiscal
year 1980 $250,000 for the operation of the Cumberland AHEC,
$220,000 for the University of Maryland at Baltimore to
provide the State's share of matching funds for the
development of the urban and geriatric AEHCs in Baltimore
City, and $200,000 to provide funds to plan two additional
centers, one on the Eastern Shore and one other; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Governor is requested to include
similar appropriate sums in budgets for future fiscal years
as other AHEC members in the Statewide program become
operational; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the
Honorable Blair Lee III, Acting Governor.
