SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect July 1, 1978.

AN ACT concerning

Extortion

FOR the purpose of prohibiting the extortionate acts by
State and local employees against other State and looal
employees certain others; prohibiting the implied
repeal of certain common law crimes; and providing a
penalty; and generally relating to extortion.

BY adding to

Article 27 — Crimes and Punishments

Section 562B

Annotated Code of Maryland

(1976 Replacement Volume and 1977 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That section(s) of the Annotated Code of Maryland
be repealed, amended, or enacted to read as follows:

Article 27 - Crimes and Punishments

562B.

EVERY OFFICER OR EMPLOYEE OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND, A
COUNTY, BALTIMORE CITY, MUNICIPALITY, OR MULTICOUNTY

MULTI-COUNTY OR BI-COUNTY AGENCY WHO, BY FORCE,

INTIMIDATION, OR THREAT OF DISMISSAL FROM EMPLOYMENT OR BY
ANY OTHER MANNER WHATSOEVER INDUCES ANY PERSON EMPLOYED IN
ANY WAY IN WORK FINANCED IN WHOLE OR IN PART BY THE STATE OF
MARYLAND, A COUNTY, BALTIMORE CITY, MUNICIPALITY, OR

MULTICOUNTY MULTI-COUNTY OR BI-COUNTY AGENCY TO GIVE UP ANY
PART OF THE COMPENSATION TO WHICH HE IS ENTITLED UNDER A
CONTRACT OR OTHERWISE, IS GUILTY OF A FELONY AND SHALL BE
FINED NOT MORE THAN $5,000 OR IMPRISONED NOT MORE THAN FIVE
YEARS OR BOTH. A PROSECUTION UNDER THIS SECTION SHALL BE
INSTITUTED WITHIN 5 YEARS AFTER THE OFFENSE WAS COMMITTED.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That any

common-law crimes dealing with extortion are not abolished.
