TITLE 13. VEHICLE LAWS—CERTIFICATES OF TITLE AND
REGISTRATION OF VEHICLES.
SUBTITLE 1. CERTIFICATES OF TITLE.
13-101. "CERTIFICATE OF ORIGIN" DEFINED.
IN THIS SUBTITLE, "CERTIFICATE OF ORIGIN" MEANS A
CERTIFICATION BY THE MANUFACTURER, ON A FORM THAT THE
ADMINISTRATION APPROVES, THAT:
(1) CERTIFIES THAT THE VEHICLE DESCRIBED IN IT HAS
BEEN TRANSFERRED TO THE DEALER OR OTHER PERSON NAMED
AND THAT THE TRANSFER IS THE FIRST TRANSFER OF THE
VEHICLE IN ORDINARY TRADE AND COMMERCE; AND
(2) DESCRIBES THE VEHICLE BY INCLUDING:
(I) ITS MAKE, MODEL, YEAR, VEHICLE
IDENTIFICATION NUMBER, TYPE OF BODY, NUMBER OF CYLINDERS,
AND ENGINE NUMBER; AND
(II) ANY OTHER INFORMATION THAT THE
ADMINISTRATION REQUIRES.
REVISOR'S NOTE: This section presently appears as
Art. 66 1/2, §1-147.
It is transferred to this subtitle since the
defined term is used only in this subtitle of
the Maryland Vehicle Law.
The present reference to a "signed"
certification is deleted as unnecessary in
light of the general requirements of §12—109
of this article to the same effect.
Present references to a "motor vehicle" are
deleted as erroneous. As seen from the use of
the term "certificate of origin" in present
Art. 66 1/2, §§ 3-104(b), 3-113.1, and
3-113.1A - now §§ 13-104.1, 13-113.1, and
13-113.2 of this subtitle, respectively — the
certificate of origin is used for "vehicles"
generally and is not limited to "motor
vehicles".
In item (2)(i) of this section, the more
accurate term "vehicle identification number",
which is defined in §11-177 of this article,
is substituted for "serial number". This
conforms to the usage elsewhere in this
subtitle; cf., e.g., §13-104(b)(2).
