from $1,000 to $5,000, whereas House Bill 716 totally
repeals the current dollar limitation. I believe that
there should be a maximum dollar limit in these cases of
parental restitution, rather than having an openended
liability.
For these reasons, I have decided to veto House Bill
716.

House Bill No. 734 - Firefighters - Hours of Work
AN ACT concerning
Hours of Work for Firefighters
FOR the purpose of providing for a maximum number of
hours state employed firefighters may be required to
work.
May 26, 1977
Honorable John Hanson Briscoe
Speaker of the House of Delegates
State House
Annapolis, Maryland 21404
Dear Mr. Speaker:
In accordance with Article II, Section 17 of the
Maryland Constitution, I have today vetoed House Bill
734.
This bill provides that a state employed firefighter
may not be required to work more than 48 hours per week
while maintaining a 24-hour shift.
The only state employed firefighters at the present
time are the 45 members of the Baltimore-Washington
International Airport Fire/Rescue Service. The present
average work week for these firefighters is 56 hours.
Since the purchase of the airport by the State, the
Aviation Administration has permitted the firefighters to
remain on a 56-hour week while working 24-hour shifts.
