MARVIN MANDEL, Governor                            2257 Section 7—202 Annotated Code of Maryland (1974 Volume and 1976 Supplement)
SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That Section 7-202 of Article - Natural
Resources, of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1974 Volume
and 1976 Supplement) be and it is hereby repealed and
reenacted, with amendments, to read as follows: Article - Natural Resources 7.202. (a) The Secretary shall [select and] sppoint[,
from a list of eligible persons prepared by the Secretary of Personnel, a person known as the "Director of the Bureau of Mines," to be in charge of the Bureau] THE DIRECTOR OF THE BUREAU MINES. The director shall continue to hold office in accordance with the provisions
of the Merit System Law. [If a vacancy in the office

occurs, a successor shall be selected and appointed in
the same manner.] (b) The Director shall be a citizen of Maryland.
[He shall have at least ten years' practical experience
in the working, ventilation, and drainage of bituminous
coal mines, and a practical and scientific knowledge of
all noxious and dangerous gases found in any mine. Graduation with a degree in mining engineering from a school of recognized standing standing shall be considered equivalent to two years' working experience.] The Directors shall devote full-time to the duties of the
office, and may not directly or indirectly have a
financial interest in any way in any coal mine, mining
operation, or mining investment in this or any contiguous
state. [(c) Before entering upon the duties of his office,
the Director shall take the oath prescribed by the
Constitution. He shall render an account monthly of the expenses necessarily incurred in the discharge of his
duties together with an account of necessary expenses incurred by the district mine inspectors which he approves. The Comptroller, shall pay, by warrant, the expenses in an amount not exceeding the allowance provided by appropriation or other law.] SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That new Section 7-202 be and it is hereby added to Article — Natural Resources, of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1974 Volume and 1976 Supplement) to read as follows: Article - Natural Resources 7-202.
