Section 409-I

Annotated Code of Maryland

(1971 Replacement Volume and 1975 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That new Section 409-I be and it is hereby
added to Article 41 - Governor — Executive and
Administrative Departments, of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1971 Replacement Volume and 1975 Supplement) to
read as follows:

Article 41 — Governor — Executive and
Administrative Departments

409-I. COMMISSION ON INDIAN [[HISTORY AND CULTURE]]
AFFAIRS.

(A)    THE COMMISSION ON INDIAN [[HISTORY AND
CULTURE]] AFFAIRS IS CREATED AS AN [[INDEPENDENT]] AGENCY

[[WITHIN]] IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY

DEVELOPMENT__OF THE STATE GOVERNMENT. IT SHALL BE

REFERRED TO AS THE "COMMISSION."

[[(B) (1) THE COMMISSION SHALL CONSIST OF NINE
MEMBERS APPOINTED BY THE GOVERNOR. THE APPOINTEES SHALL
REPRESENT THE ENTIRE MARYLAND COMMUNITY AND THE INDIAN
COMMUNITIES IN THIS STATE, AND THEY SHALL HAVE KNOWLEDGE
OF INDIAN CULTURE AND HISTORY, RESPECTIVELY; BE SENSITIVE
TO THE PROBLEMS OF THE INDIAN COMMUNITIES; AND BE
CONNECTED WITH AGENCIES WORKING TO INTEGRATE INDIAN
HISTORY AND CULTURE INTO THE HISTORY OF MARYLAND AND OUR
AMERICAN CULTURE.]]

(B)    (1) THE COMMISSION SHALL CONSIST OF NINE

MEMBERS APPOINTED BY THE GOVERNOR, A MAJORITY OF WHOM

SHALL BE MEMBERS OF THE NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN

COMMUNITIES OF THIS STATE. THE MEMBERS OF THE COMMISSION

SHALL HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF INDIAN CULTURE AND HISTORY, AND

BE SENSITIVE TO THE PROBLEMS OF THE INDIAN COMMUNITIES.

(2)    MEMBERS OF THE COMMISSION SHALL RECEIVE
NO COMPENSATION FOR THEIR SERVICES AS SUCH, BUT THEY MAY
BE REIMBURSED FOR PROPER AND NECESSARY EXPENSES INCURRED
IN THE DISCHARGE OF THEIR DUTIES ON THE COMMISSION IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE STANDARD TRAVEL REGULATIONS.

(3)    THE GOVERNOR, FROM TIME TO TIME, SHALL
DESIGNATE A CHAIRMAN AND VICE CHAIRMAN FROM AMONG THE
MEMBERS OF THE COMMISSION.

(4)    THE COMMISSION SHALL MEET AT THE CALL OF
EITHER THE CHAIRMAN OR A MAJORITY OF THE MEMBERS.

(C)    THE COMMISSION SHALL:

PROJECTS

(1)         INITIATE, DIRECT, AND COORDINATE

WHICH FURTHER THE UNDERSTANDING OF INDIAN
