Senate Bill 436, which was enacted by the General
Assembly and signed by me on May 4, 1976, accomplishes
the same objective.

It is therefore unnecesssary for me to sign House
Bill 1036.

House Bill No. 1071 — Telephone Directory Assistance

AN ACT concerning

Public Service Commission — Telephone Companies

FOR the purpose of providing that the Public Service
Commission may not authorize charges for directory
assistance.

Dear Mr. Speaker:

In accordance with Article II, Section 17 of the
Maryland Constitution, I have today vetoed House Bill
1071.

This is one of two bills passed by the General
Assembly concerning directory assistance calls. Senate
Bill 509, which I have signed, prohibits the Public
Service Commission from authorizing the telephone company
to impose a charge for directory assistance prior to the
adjournment of the 1977 session of the General Assembly.
It also requires the Commission and the People's Counsel,
with the cooperation of the telephone companies, to
prepare a report of the cost, service need, and impact of
directory assistance charges for submission to the
General Assembly at its next session.

House Bill 1071 flatly prohibits the Commission from
