2-309.

(i) (1) The Sheriff of Cecil County shall
receive a salary of $12,500 and free lodging for himself
and his family at the jail or $1,500 per year. The
Sheriff shall appoint [16] 18 full-time deputy sheriffs,
one as chief deputy and one as investigator. After the
investigator has performed his duties, he shall assume
the duties of a deputy. The starting salary of the chief
deputy and investigator is $8,300 and their maximum
salary is $10,800. The remaining [[14]] 16 deputies'
starting salary is $8,000 and their maximum salary is
$10,500. Each deputy shall receive annual increments of
$400 after the first year of service, $c00 after the
second, third, and fourth years, and $600 after the fifth
year. Each deputy may not receive the first year
increment of $400 prior to the completion of one full
year of service. Increments shall begin the July 1 of
each year in which they are effective. The treasurer
shall certify the salaries and annual increments of this
subsection. If any deputy resigns or is fired and
subsequently is rehired as a deputy, he may either be
paid as if he were hired for the first time or receive
credit for previous service.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That Sections
2-309(i)(2) through (5), respectively, of Article -
Courts and Judicial Proceedings, of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1974 Volume and 1975 Supplement) be and they
are hereby renumbered to be Sections 2—309(i)(3) through
(6), respectively.

SECTION 3. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That new
Section 2—309(i) (2) be and it is hereby added to Article
— Courts and Judicial Proceedings, of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1974 Volume and 1975 Supplement) to read as
follows:

2-309.

(i) (2) ANY PERSON, OTHER THAN THE SHERIFF,
ENUMERATED IN (1) WHO HAS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY A
PROGRAM IN LAW-ENFORCEMENT TRAINING RECOGNISED BY THE
MARYLAND POLICE TRAINING COMMISSION OR HAS REACHED THE
AGE OF 35 WITH FIVE YEARS SERVICE SHALL RECEIVE $500
ANNUALLY IN ADDITION TO THE SALARY PROVIDED IN (1).

SECTION 4. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect July 1, 1976.
