580 (570 William & Mary by the Grace of God King & Queen of England Scotland France & Ireland Defenders of the Faith &c To all to whome these presents shall come Greeting Know Yee that Wee of our especiall grace certaine knowledge and Meer Motion have Given and Granted and by these presents Doe Give and Grant unto our Trusty and Welbeloved Sir Thomas Lawrence Barronet the office or place of Secretary of the Province of Maryland in America the Government whereof Wee have taken into our hands and under our imediate care And him the said Sir Thomas Lawrence Secretary of the Province of Maryland in America Wee doe make ordaine and constitute by these presents To have hold Exercise and Enjoy the said office or place unto the said Sir Thomas Lawrence by himselfe or his sufficient Deputy Dureing our pleasure and the Residence of the said Sir Thomas Lawrence in the said Province Togeather with all Rights priviledges proffitts perquisites and advantages to the said office belonging incident or in any wise appertaining And in such Manner and form as any Secretary of any of our Provinces in America for or by reason of the Exercise and Execution of such office or place maÿ lawfully have Receive or Enjoy In Witness whereof Wee have Caused these our Letters to be made Patents Witness our selves all Wesminster the Fifth day of September in the third yeare of our Reigne By writt of Privy seale Recorded 28.th Septemb 1692 Pigott At the Court at Whithall the 21.th of Decemb.r 1691 Present The Kigns most Excellent Maj.ties in Councill Whereas the R.t Hono.ble the Lord of the Committee of Trade and Plantations have by their Report dated the 15.th instant Represented that upon a memoriall of sir Thomas Lawrence Secretary of Maryland Their Lopps humbly concerne that the Nominating and appointing of clerks for the ten County Courts in that Province does properly belong to their Maj.ties Secretary and ^that^ those Places ought not to be sold But that in consideration that the Secretary is to give security for their good Behaviour it may be fitt that the Secretary be allowed to receive yearly a Fee or Gratuity of the Tenth part of one yeares Vallue and Now more of each Place from Such clerks as shall be Nominated by him the said Value to be Estimated by the Govern.r and Councill upon a Vacancy His Maj.ties in Councill is thereupon this day pleased to order as it is hereby Ordered That the said Places of the Clerks of the Ten County Courts in Maryland be Not sold but that the Nomination & appointment of the said clerks is belonging to the office of their Maj.ties Secretary The said S.r Thomas Lawrence and such as shall succeed him in that office be permitted to Receive from each of the clerks in the |
