A Senate Joint Resolution concerning

Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin — Resolution of Sympathy

FOR the purpose of expressing the deep sympathy of the
General Assembly of Maryland over the passing of the
Honorable Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin, former
Governor of Maryland and former Mayor of the City of
Baltimore.

WHEREAS, The members of the General Assembly of
Maryland have learned with deep regret and sorrow of the
passing of the Honorable Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin on
August 10, 1974.

Mr. McKeldin served two terms as Governor of
Maryland and, also, two terms as Mayor of the City of
Baltimore, and in his entire adult lifetime was very much
in the center of the political and governmental life of
his city and state.

Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin traced his origin to
humble beginnings in South Baltimore. He was the son of
a policeman and a German immigrant mother, and one of
eleven children. With imagination, hard work and
constant dedication, he became one of the most effective
and distinguished public leaders in twentieth century
Maryland.

Mr. McKeldin began his career as a $20 a month
office boy. From this humble beginning he grew in
stature and perspective to become one of the great men of
the century in this State.

He was a man of warm, vibrant, open personality.
His entire public career was marked by a strong and
binding commitment to ideals of equality and justice for
all.

As much as anyone in his generation, Theodore
Roosevelt McKeldin possessed a unique appreciation for
the diversity of America's religious, racial and ethnic
heritage. He strove constantly to bring together these
seemingly different elements in American life and, as few
men of his time, achieved a synthesis of Americans in
their common citizenship.
