SHERIFFS, ALL FULL-TIME DEPUTY SHERIFFS OF ALL RANKS,
PROVIDED FOR THE SHERIFF IN THE BUDGET OF THE COUNTY,
UPON COMMENCEMENT OF ANY POSITION IN THE SHERIFF'S
DEPARTMENT MAY BE REQUIRED BY THE SHERIFF TO SERVE A
PROBATIONARY PERIOD OF 12 MONTHS, SUCH PROBATIONARY
PERIOD MAY BE EXTENDED BY THE SHERIFF FOR REASONABLE
CAUSE. DURING THE PROBATIONARY PERIOD, THE DETERMINATION
OF THE EMPLOYEES QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITY TO SERVE IN
THE POSITION OF A PERMANENT, NONPROBATIONARY EMPLOYEE
SHALL BE WITHIN THE EXCLUSIVE DISCRETION OF THE SHERIFF.
ALL PROBATIONARY COMMISSIONED DEPUTY SHERIFFS SHALL BE
REQUIRED TO COMPLETE A MINIMUM OF 300 HOURS OF CLASSROOM
TRAINING AT AN ACADEMY DESIGNATED BY THE MARYLAND POLICE
TRAINING COMMISSION, AND 160 HOURS OF TRAINING AT AN
ACADEMY DESIGNATED BY THE MARYLAND CORRECTIONAL TRAINING
COMMISSION.

(6)     WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE ASSISTANT
SHERIFFS, ALL NONPROBATIONARY COMMISSIONED FULL-TIME
EMPLOYEES, INCLUDING DEPUTY SHERIFFS OF ALL RANKS,
PROVIDED FOR THE SHERIFF IN THE BUDGET OF THE COUNTY,
SHALL BE SUBJECT TO THE COUNTY MERIT SYSTEM WITH REGARD
TO QUALIFICATIONS FOR HIRING, PROMOTIONS AND
COMPENSATION; AND SUBJECT TO THE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
BILL OF RIGHTS WITH REGARD TO DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

(7)     THE SHERIFF AND HIS DEPUTIES SHALL BE
LIMITED IN THEIR DUTIES AS LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, AS
FOLLOWS:

(A) THE FULL POWER OF ARREST, THE
SERVICE OF PROCESS OF ALL WRITS, SUMMONSES, ORDERS,
PETITIONS, SUBPOENAS, WARRANTS, RULES TO SHOW CAUSE, AND
ALL OTHER LEGAL PAPERS;

(B) THE CARE AND SUPERVISION OF
PRISONERS AT ANY OF THE COUNTY DETENTION CENTERS,
HOSPITALS, PENAL INSTITUTIONS, OR OTHER PLACES OF
CONFINEMENT;

(C) THE SECURITY OF ALL STATE AND
COUNTY COURTS AND PERFORM SUCH DUTIES AS MAY BE REQUIRED
OF THEM BY SAID COURTS;

(D) THE TRANSPORTATION OF ALL LEGALLY
DETAINED PERSONS;

(E) NEITHER THE SHERIFF OF PRINCE
GEORGE'S COUNTY NOR ANY OF HIS DEPUTIES SHALL CONDUCT
CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS, EXCEPT IN MATTERS CONCERNING THE
SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT OR UPON REQUEST OF THE COURTS.
