AN ACT concerning
Health — Day—Care for the Elderly
FOR the purpose of including within the stated purposes
for day—care services for the elderly, the intent
that they be utilized as an alternative to Long—term
care facilities, generally; redefining the term
"elderly" to include certain persons living alone;
modifying certain, of the examples of day—care
services to be purchased; and relating generally to
matters pertaining thereto.
BY repealing and re—enacting, with amendments.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That Sections 717A, 717B and 717C(c) of Article
43 - Health, of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1971
Replacement Volume and 1973 Supplement) be and they are
hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read
as follows:

717A.
The purpose of this subtitle is: (1) to provide for
the establishment of day—care centers and services in the
State for the elderly that will give many elderly persons
the chance to remain with their families and in their
communities, rather than being placed in nursing homes or
State institutions; (2) to allow families to keep their
elderly parents and relatives with them, instead of
having to place them in impersonal institutions; and (3)
to allow the State of Maryland to deal more effectively
and economically with the needs of its elderly citizens.
It is the intent of the General Assembly that day—care
centers and services for the elderly shall be utilized to
the greatest extent possible as an alternative to the
unnecessary commitment of elderly persons to nursing
