944                                             LAWS OF MARYLAND                                [Ch. 4

OF EACH MINE SHALL USE THESE FORMS TO NOTIFY EACH
PERSON CONCERNED OF ANY DANGER NOT READILY APPARENT.

(C) SIGNAL CODE.--THE FOLLOWING SIGNAL CODE

SHALL BE FOLLOWED IN EVERY MINE WHEN SIGNALS ARE USED:

(1)   ONE RING OR WHISTLE: HOIST; IF IN
MOTION, STOP;

(2)    TWO RINGS OR WHISTLES: LOWES CAGE IF

SIGNALED FROM TOP, SEND AWAY EMPTY CAGE;

(3)   THREE RINGS OR WHISTLES: WORKERS ARE
COMING UP. WHEN ENGINEER REPLIES BY ONE RING, PERSONS
GET ON CAGE AND RING ONCE TO HOIST;

(4)   FOUR RINGS OR WHISTLES: HOIST SLOWLY;
IMPLYING DANGER;

(5)    FIVE RINGS OR WHISTLES: ACCIDENT IN

MINE - SEND STRETCHER;

(6)   ADDITIONAL SIGNALS: THE OPERATOR AND
DISTRICT MINE INSPECTOR BY AGREEMENT MAY ADD
ADDITIONAL SIGNALS; HOWEVER, THESE SIGNALS MUST BE
PRINTED TOGETHER WITH THE CODE ON LARGE POSTERS OR
CARDS, AND DISPLAYED IN THE ENGINE ROOM AND AT EVERY
POINT WHERE USED.

(D) INTERFERING WITH SIGNAL SYSTEM.—A PERSON
MAY NOT DEFACE, PULL DOWN, DESTROY, INTERFERE WITH, OR
DISREGARD ANY NOTICE BOARD, SIGNAL, OR WARNING IN ANY
MINE, KNOWINGLY DAMAGE ANY SIGNAL OR COMMUNICATION
SYSTEM, KNOWINGLY GIVE OR CAUSE TO BE GIVEN ANY WRONG
SIGNAL WITHIN OR ABOUT THE MINE, DEFACE OR DESTROY ANY
GENERAL OR SPECIAL RULES OR MINING LAWS, OR KNOWINGLY
DESTROY, FALSIFY, REMOVE, OR CONCEAL ANY RECORD OR
REPORT REQUIRED TO BE MADE AND KEPT.

REVISOR'S NOTE: This subsection presently appears
as Article 66C, section 580 of the Code.
The last phrase is proposed for deletion in
light of the uniform penalty provision of
