474                                            LAWS OF MARYLAND                                [Ch. 4

(E) DIRECTOR OF SURVEY. - THE GOVERNOR, [[UPON
THE RECOMMENDATION]] WITH THE ADVICE OF THE SECRETARY,
SHALL APPOINT THE DIRECTOR OF THE SURVEY. THE
DIRECTOR SHALL HOLD OFFICE UNDER AND SUBJECT TO THE
PROVISIONS OF §1-101(D) OF THIS ARTICLE. HE SHALL BE
A PERSON WITH EXECUTIVE ABILITY, AND SPECIAL TRAINING
AND EXPERIENCE IN HANDLING PROBLEMS IN THE FIELDS OF
GEOLOGY AND WATER RESOURCES.

REVISOR'S NOTE: Subsection (a) is new language
derived from Article 66C, section 15.

Subsection (b) presently appears as the
first paragraph of Article 66C, section 17
of the Code. The final sentence of this
paragraph is proposed for deletion as
unnecessary since under Article 41,
sections 232 and 234 (proposed as section
1-101(d) in this Article) such power rests
with the Secretary. The language that the
director of the survey shall be
knowledgeable in the field of water
resources is retained. Although in June,
1964 the Department of Water Resources and
the Maryland Geological Survey both were
created and all regulatory functions and
jurisdiction pertaining to water resources
were transferred from the survey to the
Department of Water Resources, the survey
today still has certain responsibilities in
the area of research and development
pertaining to ground water. The Department
of Natural Resources advises that it is
desirable to retain the requirement that
the survey director have a water resources
background as well. The only other changes
made are in style.

2-202. FUNCTIONS OF MARYLAND GEOLOGICAL SURVEY.
THE SURVEY SHALL:

(1)   CONDUCT TOPOGRAPHIC, GEOLOGIC, HYDROGHAPHIC,

AND GEOPHYSICAL SURVEYS;

(2)   PREPARE TOPOGRAPHIC, GEOLOGIC, AND OTHER

TYPES OF MAPS TO MEET SPECIFIC NEEDS;

(3)   PREPARE REPORTS ON THE EXTENT AND CHARACTER

OF THE STATE'S GEOLOGY, MINERAL, AND WATER
