CHAPTER 376
(Senate Bill 266)
AN ACT to add new Section 50 to Article 96-1/2 of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1972 Supplement), title "Veterans," to follow immediately after
Section 49 thereof, and to be under the new subtitle "Southeast Asia
Prisoners-of-War and Missing-in-Action," to provide that children of certain
members of the Armed Forces of the United States declared prisoners of war or
missing in action in Southeast Asia after a certain date shall be eligible for War
Orphan scholarships as provided in Section 49 of this Article.
SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That new Section 50 be and it is hereby added to Article 96-1/2 of
the Annotated Code of Maryland (1972 Supplement), title "Veterans," to follow
immediately after Section 49 thereof, and to be under the new subtitle "Southeast
Asia Prisoners-of-War and Missing-in-Action," and to read as follows:
SOUTHEAST ASIA PRISONERS-OF-WAR AND MISSING-IN-ACTION

WAR ORPHAN SCHOLARSHIPS AS PROVIDED IN SECTION 49 OF
THIS ARTICLE SHALL BE GRANTED IN THE SAME MANNER, TO THE
SAME INSTITUTIONS, IN THE SAME AMOUNT , TO CHILDREN OF
ANY PERSON WHO, IN THE COURSE OF HONORABLE SERVICE IN
THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES, WAS DECLARED BY
THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE TO BE A
PRISONER OF WAR OR MISSING IN ACTION AS A RESULT OF
UNITED STATES PARTICIPATION IN ARMED CONFLICT IN
SOUTHEAST ASIA ON OR AFTER JANUARY 1, 1960, WHO AT THE
[[TIME OF ENTRY INTO THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED
STATES, OR AT THE]] TIME HE WAS DECLARED TO BE A PRISONER
OF WAR OR MISSING IN ACTION, WAS A RESIDENT OF MARYLAND.
THIS SECTION IS ONLY APPLICABLE TO THOSE CHILDREN WHO
WERE BORN PRIOR TO OR DURING THE TIME THE PERSON WAS A
PRISONER OF WAR OR MISSING IN ACTION.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take
effect July 1, 1973.
