48.

In every city, county or other political subdivision of the State in which
appointments to positions in the municipal or county government are made under
any civil service or merit system law or ordinance, the commission or board which
provides eligible lists for appointment shall promulgate rules or regulations
granting special credit or credits to honorably discharged veterans of the military
and naval services of the United States and who have been residents of this State
for five years or more immediately preceding the date on which such veterans take
any merit system examination. The said commission or board shall have the power
to determine the nature and extent of the special credit or credits to be allowed
such veterans and may allow a greater credit or credits to disabled veterans than to
nondisabled veterans. The same credit, credits or preference may be extended to
the [wives] SPOUSES of such veterans as have themselves been unable to qualify
for merit system appointment because of disability and to the unmarried (widows)
SURVIVING SPOUSES of deceased veterans. The rules and regulations of any
civil service commission or board may also provide for exempting such war
veterans under fifty-five years of age from any age limitation or requirement.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take
effect July 1, 1973.

CHAPTER 225
(Senate Bill 406)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 4 of Article 100 of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replacement Volume and 1972
Supplement), title "Work, Labor, and Employment," subtitle "Employment of
Minors," to provide for the [[inclusion]] exclusion of certain volunteer fire
personnel [[within]] from the meaning of gainful employment.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That Section 4 of Article 100 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1964 Replacement Volume and 1972 Supplement), title "Work, Labor, and
Employment," subtitle "Employment of Minors," be and it is hereby repealed and
re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

As used in this subtitle "gainful occupation" does not include employment in
farm work or in domestic service in a private home provided such farm work and
domestic service is performed outside school hours, nor in occasional employment
by a householder in connection with the household and not in connection with the
householder's business or occupation and when confined to casual domestic tasks
performed outside regular school hours and with the consent of the parent or legal
guardian, nor does it apply to the delivery of newspapers to the consumer, nor to
children employed by their parents in occupations other than manufacturing or
mining or hazardous occupations[;]: nor does it apply to tasks performed by
volunteers in a hospital, OR VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT OR
COMPANY PERSONNEL 16 YEARS OR OLDER performed outside of school
