in absence of an eligibility list to fill a vacancy or
a newly created position in the classified service.
No such temporary appointment shall continue for a
period exceeding four months nor after the
establishment of an eligibility list, and no such
temporary employee shall have status in the classified
service.

(9)    Uniformed officer of the county police or
fire department. All full—time classified uniformed
employees of the police department, detention center
or fire department occupying public safety positions
as listed in section 1—215.

(10)   Work day. The number of hours an employee
is normally required to work per day.

Section 1—206. Disability leave.

(a)   All full-time, regular employees on hourly,
weekly or semi—monthly payroll covered by the
classified service shall be entitled to earn [sick]
DISABILITY leave at the rate of one and one—quarter
work days for each full month of creditable service
beginning with the seventh month of continuous
service; a total of fifteen work days per year. After
completion of the first six months of continuous
service, eligible employees shall be credited with
seven and one—half work days earned [sick] DISABILITY
leave. Fire department personnel on the three—platoon
system schedule should accumulate [sick] DISABILITY
leave on the same basis; provided, that [sick]
DISABILITY leave shall be charged at the rate of two
days for each twenty—four hour tour of duty missed.
If only part of a twenty—four hour tour is missed, the
employee shall be charged in proportion to the time
missed in amounts not smaller than one—half day of
[sick] DISABILITY leave (six duty hours).

(b)    No temporary or emergency employee shall be
entitled to earn [sick] DISABILITY leave.

(c) Employees may accumulate and carry over
[sick] DISABILITY leave into a new calendar year
without restriction on the total amount of
accumulation.

(d) Accumulated [sick] DISABILITY leave is
available for use in the following circumstances:
