RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND

COUNCIL OF SHARPSBURG
TO AMEND THE TOWN CHARTER

Resolution of the Mayor and Council of Sharpsburg, adopted pursuant to the
authority of Article 11-E of the Constitution of Maryland and Section 13 of
Article 23-A of the Annotated Code of Maryland, (1957 Edition), title
"Corporations - Municipal," sub-title "Home Rule," sub-heading "Charter
Amendments," to amend Section 29-4 of the Charter of the Mayor and Council of
Sharpsburg as set forth in Article 22 of Code of Public Local Laws of Washington
County (1957 Edition) as said Section was enacted by Chapter 294 of the Laws of
Maryland (1941) to permit all citizens who have resided within the corporate limits
of Sharpsburg thirty (30) days next preceding an election to vote at said election
and all subsequent elections; also to provide for the election of a Mayor, Vice
Mayor and five (5) Councilmen on the third Tuesday in November, A.D., 1972
and every alternate year thereafter; and to amend Section 29-8 of the Charter of
the Mayor and Council of Sharpsburg as set forth in Article 22 of Code of Public
Local Laws of Washington County (1957 Edition) as said Section was enacted by
Chapter 99 of Laws of Maryland (1898), to provide for an election judge for the
municipal election to be held on the third Tuesday in November, A.D., 1972, in
accordance with the provisions of said Article 11-E of the Constitution of
Maryland and Article 23-A of the Annotated Code of Maryland, (1957 Edition).

SECTION 1. BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Council of Sharpsburg
that Section 29-4 of the Charter of the Mayor and Council of Sharpsburg as set
forth in Article 22 of Code of Public Local Laws of Washington County (1957
Edition) as said Section was enacted by Chapter 294 of the Laws of Maryland
(1941), be and the same is hereby amended by adding to said original section that
part thereof which is hereafter underscored and by deleting therefrom that part
which is enclosed with double parentheses, (Note this symbology has been
changed-Editor.) which section reads as follows:

All citizens of the State of Maryland, entitled to right of franchise therein and
who have resided within the corporate limits of the town of Sharpsburg [six
months] THIRTY DAYS next preceding an election shall be entitled to vote at
said election and all subsequent elections. They also shall be qualified to hold
office, either elective or appointive provided they have so resided in said town five
years previous to any election. The said voters shall on the [second Monday of
September, A.D. 1952] THIRD TUESDAY IN NOVEMBER, A.D. 1972, and
upon the same day in every alternate year thereafter, elect by ballot one citizen for
Mayor and one citizen for Vice-Mayor of said town, both of whom shall be
citizens of the United States and five years residents of said town next preceding
the election, and at least twenty-five years of age; they shall take the oath of office
as hereinafter prescribed for town officers, and remain in office until there
successors are elected and qualified.
