AN ACT to add new Section 47 to Article 38A of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1971 Replacement Volume), title "Fires and Investigations," to
follow immediately after Section 46 thereof and to be under the new subtitle
"Elevators," to require certain elevators to [[post]] have signs warning against
use during a fire, to establish requirements for certain sign positions and
lettering, and providing a penalty for violation of this Act.
SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That new Section 47 be and it is hereby added to Article 38A of
the Annotated Code of Maryland (1971 Replacement Volume), title "Fires and
Investigations," to follow immediately after Section 46 thereof and to be under the
new subtitle "Elevators" and to read as follows:
ELEVATORS
47.
(A) EVERY PASSENGER ELEVATOR IN A PERMANENT
INSTALLATION USED BY THE PUBLIC SHALL HAVE A SIGN
READING "WARNING - ELEVATORS SHALL NOT BE USED IN EVENT
OF FIRE - USE [[STAIRS]] MARKED EXIT STAIRWAYS" POSTED AT
THE ENTRANCE TO THE ELEVATOR SHAFT ON EVERY FLOOR. THE
SIGN SHALL BE POSTED DIRECTLY ABOVE THE CALL BUTTON. A
SIMILAR SIGN SHALL BE POSTED WITHIN THE ELEVATOR CABIN.
THE TOPS OF THESE SIGNS SHALL NOT BE MORE THAN SIX FEET
ABOVE THE FLOOR AND THE LETTERING IN THE WORD
"WARNING" SHALL BE AT LEAST THREE-EIGHTHS OF AN INCH
AND THE REST OF THE LETTERING SHALL BE [(ONE-HALF]] AT
LEAST ONE-QUARTER INCH. THE FIRE MARSHAL SHALL
PROMULGATE RULES CONCERNING THE LETTERING TO ASSURE
THAT THE SIGN IS EASILY READABLE. [[THE SIGNS MUST BE AT
LEAST TEN INCHES BY TWELVE INCHES IN SIZE.]]
(B) ANY PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR A VIOLATION OF THIS
SECTION SHALL BE SUBJECT TO THE PENALTIES AS PROVIDED BY
SECTION 13 OF THIS ARTICLE.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take
effect July 1, 1973.
