ISSUE REGULATIONS FOR A PHASE-IN OF COMPLIANCE WITH THIS
SECTION.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take
effect July 1, 1973.

CHAPTER 679

(Senate Bill 390)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sections 489, 506, 532, 556(a),
558(f), 560(b),561(c), 562 and 563 of Article 66C of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1970 Replacement Volume), title "Natural Resources," subtitle "Mining,"
subheading "In General,'" to change the references to persons of a particular sex in
certain sections concerning the Bureau of Mines and the functions and duties of
personnel working in mines.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That Sections 489, 506, 532, 556(a), 558(f), 560(b), 561(c), 562 and
563 of Article 66C of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1970 Replacement
Volume), title "Natural Resources," subtitle "Mining," subheading "In General,"
be and they are hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, and all to read
as follows:

489.

The Director of the Bureau of Mines shall be a [male] citizen of Maryland, and
shall be a competent person, having had at least ten years' practical experience in
the working, ventilation and drainage of bituminous coal mines, and having a
practical and scientific knowledge of all noxious and dangerous gases found in such
mines, and, provided, that graduation in mining engineering from a school of
recognized standing shall be considered as equivalent to two years' working
experience. [He] THE DIRECTOR shall devote [all of his] FULL time to the
duties of [his] THE office, and shall not be directly or indirectly interested in a
financial way in any coal mines in this State.

506.

Upon the recommendation of the Director, concurred in by the Secretary of
Natural Resources, the Governor shall appoint two persons, one a miner and the
other an operator, who with the Director shall constitute an Examining Board, of
which the Director shall be chairman, ex officio. Each of such persons shall be a
citizen of the United States and a resident of the State of Maryland, not less than
thirty years of age, shall have had not less than five years' practical experience in
the coal mining industry immediately preceding [his] THE appointment, and shall
be a [man] PERSON of integrity, known intelligence and knowledge of [his] his
OR HER occupation. Such members shall remain in office until upon like
recommendation their successors or any of them are appointed and qualified.
Before entering upon their duties each of the members of such Examining Board
shall take and subscribe the oath provided by the Constitution. Such Examining
Board shall be provided such office room, meeting space, equipment, stenographic
and other assistance, supplies and facilities as may be approved by the Secretary of
Natural Resources. Stenographic help and other employees of the Board shall be
selected in accordance with the rules of the State Commissioner of Personnel. Each
of such associate members shall be paid for each day of services rendered as
