standards," and such equipment, as may be found necessary to carry
out the provisions of this subtitle. The office and working standards
shall be verified upon their initial receipt, and at least once each
year thereafter, the office standards by direct comparison with the
State standards, and the working standards by comparison with the
office standards] In addition to the State primary standards provided
for in Section 1, there shall be supplied by the State such "secondary
standards" and such equipment as may be found necessary to carry
out the provisions of this subtitle. The Superintendent shall cause
the secondary standards to be verified upon their initial receipt and,
thereafter, as often as deemed necessary by comparison with the
State primary standards.
3. Systems and [Definitions] definitions of units of weight and
measure.
[The term "gallon" shall be understood to mean a unit of 231
cubic inches, of which the liquid quart, liquid pint, and gill are,
respectively, the one-quarter, the one-eighth, and the one-thirty-
second parts. The term "bushel," when used in connection with dry
measures and standard containers, shall be understood to mean a
unit of 2150.42 cubic inches, of which the dry quart and dry pint,
respectively, are the one-thirty-second and the one-sixty-fourth parts.
The term "barrel," when used in connection with flour, shall be
understood to mean a unit of 200 pounds, avoirdupois weight. The
term "barrel," when used in connection with lime, shall be under-
stood to mean units of 180 pounds and 280 pounds, avoirdupois
weight for the "small barrel" and "large barrel," respectively. The
term "barrel," when used in connection with cranberries, shall be
understood to mean a unit of 5826 cubic inches. The term "barrel,"
when used in connection with fruits and vegetables and other dry
commodities other than flour, lime and cranberries, shall be under-
stood to mean a unit of 7056 cubic inches.] The system of weights
and measures in customary use in the United States and the metric
system of weights and measures are jointly recognized, and either
one or both of these systems shall be used for all commercial pur-
poses in the State of Maryland. The definitions of basic units of
weight and measure, the tables of weight and measure, and weights
and measures equivalents as published by the National Bureau of
Standards are recognized and, except as herein provided otherwise,
shall govern weighing and measuring equipment and transactions
in the State. The term "barrel," when used in connection with fer-
mented liquor, shall be understood to mean a unit of 31 gallons. The
term "ton" shall be understood to mean a unit of 2,000 pounds,
avoirdupois weight. The term "cord" when used in connection with
wood intended for any purposes, shall be understood to mean the
amount of wood which is contained in a space of 128 cubic feet,
when the wood is ranked and well stowed and one-half the kerf of
the wood is included, nor shall the term "unit" as such be used or
allowed to be used as a standard or norm of measure of wood in-
tended for any purposes. Fractional parts of any unit defined in
this section shall be understood to mean like fractional parts of the
value of such unit as defined herein. All contracts concerning the
sale of commodities shall be construed in accordance with the pro-
visions of this section.
