§ 37. Salaries and expenses; deputies; employees; equipment.

(i) Dorchester County.—The Sheriff of Dorchester County shall
receive an annual salary of $7,700 to be paid monthly, and be allowed
the actual cost of the maintenance of automobiles and the county jail.
He shall appoint a chief deputy sheriff and one assistant deputy
sheriff who shall be paid such compensation as the County Commis-
sioners may prescribe. The Sheriff may appoint such other deputies
as may be approved by County Commissioners and who shall be com-
pensated as may be prescribed by the County Commissioners. The
Sheriff and his deputies shall serve all process, both civil and criminal
issued by the [several trial magistrates and the ] Circuit Court of
Dorchester County. The County Commissioners may authorize the
appointment of a jail matron.

§ 37. Salaries and expenses; deputies; employees; equipment.

(q) Queen Anne's County.—Until the beginning of the term of
the Sheriff of Queen Anne's County elected to that position in the
month of November, 1970, he shall receive an annual salary of six
thousand five hundred dollars ($6,500). From and after the beginning
of the term of the Sheriff elected in the month of November, 1970, he
shall receive an annual salary of not less than seven thousand five
hundred dollars ($7,500). He shall appoint a chief deputy, who
shall receive an annual salary of not less than four thousand five
hundred dollars ($4,500). The Sheriff may appoint such assistant
deputy sheriffs as the County Commissioners of said county may
approve, who shall each be paid an annual salary of not less than
four thousand two hundred dollars ($4,200). The said Commissioners
may appoint an assistant deputy sheriff, who shall receive an annual
salary of not less than four thousand two hundred dollars ($4,200)
[and be designated and assigned to serve the trial magistrates in and
for Queen Anne's County, in lieu of a constable at large, and to exe-
cute his process, orders and directions, and when not so engaged,]
to perform such other duties as the Sheriff or the chief deputy may
require. The Sheriff shall receive as of July 1, 1966, and each year
thereafter an annual allowance of two thousand five hundred dollars
($2,500) for the services of a cook for the county jail. The salaries
and expenses herein prescribed and allowed shall be in lieu of all
expenses, fees, costs and charges, except for the board and keeping
of prisoners in the county jail and other necessary operating expenses
of said jail, now or heretofore allowed by law or practice, including
all expenses for transferring persons to and from penal institutions,
places of confinement and State institutions in the State of Maryland
under sentence or order of any authorized authority.

[The Sheriff and deputy sheriffs of said county are authorized,
directed and required to serve civil and criminal process issued by
the justices of the peace and trial magistrates in and for Queen
Anne's County and directed to the Sheriff of said county or any
deputies.]

Before entering upon the duties of the office, each deputy sheriff
appointed under the authority of this subsection shall give bond to
the Sheriff of said county, in the penalty of five thousand dollars
($5,000) with security, to be approved by a judge of the Circuit Court
for said county, conditioned that he shall faithfully perform his du-
ties and account properly for all moneys and property received by
