The Sheriff if authorized by the County Commissioners, may em-
ploy a clerk-bookkeeper from and after July 1, 1959, pursuant to the
provisions of said subtitle "Classified Service," and at a salary as
agreed upon by the Sheriff and the County Commissioners. The clerk-
bookkeeper shall perform such duties as may be assigned by the
Sheriff, including the preparation of all reports from the Sheriff's
office for submission to the grand jury and the County Commissioners.

§ 37. Salaries and expenses; deputies; employees; equipment.

(g) Cecil County.—Commencing with the beginning of the next
term of office, the Sheriff of Cecil County shall receive an annual
salary of $10,500 in addition to lodging furnished him and his
family or $1,500 per year for lodging outside the jail and no other
allowance for expenses except as hereinafter provided. The Sheriff
shall appoint nine full-time deputy sheriffs, one of whom he shall
name as chief deputy and one he shall name as an investigator. The
salary of the chief deputy and investigator shall be $6,500 annually
with annual increments, subject to approval of the Sheriff of $400.00,
subject to a maximum annual salary of $8,500.00. The remaining
eight deputies shall receive annual salaries of $6,200.00 each with
annual increments, subject to the approval of the Sheriff of $400.00,
subject to a maximum annual salary of $8,000.00. The Sheriff may
hire five clerks or jailers who shall each receive $5,500.00 annually,
subject to annual increments of $400.00, with the approval of the
Sheriff, and subject to a maximum annual salary of $7,500.00. The
Sheriff's office shall be furnished by the County Commissioners with
four automobiles, two of them to be furnished by July 1, 1968, and
two more by July 1, 1969. The County Commissioners shall pay all
necessary operating expenses including but not limited to, gasoline,
oil, insurance and repairs, and shall replace these automobiles with
new ones at least once every two years. [The deputy sheriffs shall
perform all the duties heretofore performed by, the constables to the
trial magistrates' courts of Cecil County. From and after the appoint-
ment of one or more of such deputy sheriffs, any references to con-
stables, as applied to Cecil County, in any law shall be construed to
apply to deputy sheriffs.] The Sheriff and deputy sheriffs shall be
entitled to an expense allowance for travel at the rate of ten cents
(10˘) per mile actually traveled, to be paid monthly upon vouchers
submitted by the Sheriff to the County Commissioners of Cecil County,
in such form as they may specify, provided that he shall also submit
with such vouchers an affidavit sworn to by him upon personal knowl-
edge showing for each day of the month just passed the number of
miles each vehicle used by him and his deputies has been driven in
the performance of the duties of his or their office, as determined by
him from a daily check of the speedometer readings of the respective
vehicles, except such mileage allowance shall not be allowed in the
event automobiles are furnished to the Sheriff and deputies by the
County Commissioners. The Sheriff's office shall also receive an appro-
priation of $1,500, to be used for special investigations and employ-
ees, subject to the approval of the County Commissioners. The Sheriff
may also appoint temporarily such additional deputy sheriffs as he
may deem necessary for the public safety but only after he has se-
cured the approval of the County Commissioners, and the adminis-
trative judge of the Circuit Court of Cecil County, and the County
Commissioners shall allow reasonable compensation for same, but
these temporary deputies shall not serve longer than the case actually
warrants.
