Upon failure to furnish such evidence within said period, the Ad-
ministrator shall suspend any certificate of registration for every
vehicle owned by said person, and shall also suspend any operator's
license issued to such person until such time as the person furnishes
evidence that he has obtained and is covered by the required security.
(c) The security required under this section shall be a motor
vehicle liability insurance policy written by an insurer authorized to
write such a policy in Maryland (including the Maryland Automo-
bile Insurance Fund) providing for at least (i) the payment of claims
for bodily injury or death arising from an accident of up to $15,000
for any one person and of up to $30,000 for any two or more persons,
exclusive of interest and costs; (ii) the payment of claims for
property of others damaged or destroyed in an accident (except as to
claims covered by first party coverage under Section 589 of this
article) of up to $5,000, exclusive of interest and costs, and (iii) the
benefits required under Article 48A, Sections 539, 540 and 542 of this
Code; provided, however, that the Administrator may approve and
accept another form of security in lieu of a motor vehicle liability
insurance policy if he finds that such other form of security is ade-
quate to provide and does in fact provide the benefits required by this
section.
7-102.
(a) If, at any time, the security required of any person under
Section 7-101 of this article shall lapse or terminate, the certificate
of registration of the motor vehicle for which the security was in
effect, shall, as of the date the security lapses or terminates, be
automatically suspended, and shall remain suspended until the se-
curity is replaced.
(b) Every insurer writing motor vehicle liability insurance in
this State, including the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund, and
every provider of other security approved and accepted by the Ad-
ministrator in lieu of such insurance shall immediately notify the
Administrator of the lapse or termination of any such insurance
or security issued to or provided for a resident of this State. Upon
receipt of any such notice, the Administrator shall make a reasonable
effort to notify the person that his certificate of registration has
been suspended, and shall attempt to recover the certificate from
such person.
(c) No suspension of a certificate of registration hereunder shall
affect the status of title to the motor vehicle, or any property rights
in such motor vehicle; but the provisions of Section 3-401 of this
article shall be applicable with respect to the operation of such
motor vehicle.
SEC. 3. Be it further enacted, That new Section 23A be and it is
hereby added to Article 75 of the Annotated Code of Maryland, (1969
Replacement Volume and 1971 Supplement), title "Pleadings, Prac-
tice and Process at Law," subtitle "III. Practice," to follow immedi-
ately after Section 23 of said article, title, and subtitle to be under the
subheading "Comparative Negligence," and to read as follows:
