porary additional deputy sheriffs and the temporary deputies shall
not serve longer than the occasion warrants.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1972.

CHAPTER 67
(House Bill 975)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 51 (j)
of Article 25 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1966 Replace-
ment Volume and 1971 Supplement), title "County Commis-
sioners," subtitle "County Treasurers," to increase the salary of
the Treasurer of Garrett County.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 51(j) of Article 25 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1966 Replacement Volume and 1971 Supplement), title "County
Commissioners," subtitle "County Treasurers," be and it is hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

51.

(j) The county treasurer of Garrett County shall receive an an-
nual salary of [$5,500] $7,500 out of which he shall pay the expenses
of his office to the extent that they are not otherwise specifically pro-
vided for by law. Subject to the approval of the County Commission-
ers, the county treasurer shall appoint a deputy treasurer.

The deputy treasurer shall not be related to the county treasurer
by blood or marriage, and before entering upon his duties shall
execute a bond as required by the Public Local Laws of Garrett
County. The deputy treasurer shall have a thorough knowledge of
bookkeeping and related subjects, and the duties of the deputy
treasurer shall be prescribed by the county treasurer. The deputy
treasurer shall receive an annual salary from the County Commis-
sioners not to exceed $4,200.00 which is to be paid in equal monthly
installments.

The County Commissioners shall allow said treasurer $400.00
annually for the expense of secretarial services in making out tax
bills.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the provisions of this Act
shall not be construed to extend or apply to the salary of the
Treasurer of Garrett County in office on the effective date of this
Act, but the provisions of this Act concerning the salary of the
Treasurer of Garrett County shall take effect at the beginning of
the next following term of office.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1972.
