JOINT RESOLUTIONS
No. 1
(Senate Joint Resolution 13)
Senate Joint Resolution congratulating and commending the Chorus
of the Chesapeake from Dundalk, Maryland, for the achievement
of winning the 1971 International Barbershopping Chorus Champ-
ionship.
The members of the General Assembly of Maryland, speaking on
behalf of the entire State, are pleased and delighted to learn of the
achievement of the Chorus of the Chesapeake from Dundalk, Mary-
land. This group won the 1971 International Barbershopping Chorus
Championship. The contest was held on Saturday, June 26, 1971, in
New Orleans.
To be selected to represent the Mid-Atlantic District of the Society
for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet
Singing In America, Inc. (S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., Inc.), the Chorus of the
Chesapeake had to compete in a Southern Divisional Contest (24
choruses competing) and then in a District Contest where 20 choruses
competed. Having won both of these contests, the Chorus then gained
the right to represent the Mid-Atlantic District in New Orleans. A
total of over 600 choruses competed in a singing elimination contest
setup until the Chorus of the Chesapeake was declared the winner.
The Dundalk Chapter S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. is comprised of 191 mem-
bers, and 135 of those were on stage in New Orleans. Two songs were
sung: "Walking With My Sweetness Down Among The Sugar Cane"
and "That's What I Call A Pal." The Dundalk Chapter is the largest
chapter in the world and the total international membership totals
over 33,000 members. The director of the Chorus is Mr. Fred King,
and Paul Murrell is its president.
The unique achievement of the Chorus of the Chesapeake stirs the
imagination, respect and pride of every citizen in the State of Mary-
land. The members of this group have contributed freely of their
time and abilities in following this hobby, and the success of their
efforts is abundant testimony of the effort and ability they brought
to the task.
The Chorus of the Chesapeake has this succinct and meaningful
philosophy: "We exist for one reason: We love barbershop harmony
and strive to preserve its place in America's musical history. Our
International society supports the institute for Logopedics, a place
(school) for pupils with hearing, speech and other communication
defects. Our motto, in fact, is: 'We Sing That They May Speak.' At
the institute, clinical work, training and research are carried out.
We offer our moral and financial support through membership dona-
tions and benefit singing shows."
The General Assembly of Maryland salutes the Chorus of the
Chesapeake and sends sincere congratulations and best wishes to
every member of the group. They have brought honor and fame to
the State of Maryland and a rewarding sense of satisfaction to them-
selves and their families; now, therefore, be it
