(2)     The State's Attorney may appoint one deputy State's attor-
ney and [eleven] eighteen full-time assistant State's attorneys.
The salary of the deputy State's attorney shall be at such compen-
sation, not exceeding [twenty two thousand five hundred] twenty-
five thousand dollars [($22,500)] ($25,000) TWENTY-FOUR
THOUSAND DOLLARS ($24,000) per annum as the State's
Attorney may deem proper, to be paid by the County [Commission-
ers] Executive and County Council. The salary of the [eleven]
eighteen full-time assistant State's attorneys shall be at such com-
pensation, not exceeding [eighteen] twenty thousand dollars

[($18,000)] ($20,000) twenty thousand dollars

($20,000) per annum each, as the State's Attorney may deem
proper, to be paid by the county on the certification of the State's
Attorney to the County [Commissioners] Executive and County
Council.
FROM THE ASSISTANT STATE'S ATTORNEY IN
ADDITION TO THE DEPUTY STATE'S ATTORNEY AND
THE EIGHTEEN ASSISTANT STATE'S ATTORNEYS,
THE STATE'S ATTORNEY MAY APPOINT ONE PRINCIPAL
ASSISTANT STATE'S ATTORNEY. THE SALARY OF THE
PRINCIPAL ASSISTANT STATE'S ATTORNEY SHALL BE AT
SUCH COMPENSATION, NOT EXCEEDING TWENTY THOU
SAND DOLLARS ($20,000)
TWENTY-ONE THOUSAND FIVE
HUNDRED DOLLARS ($21,500), AS THE STATE'S ATTORNEY
MAY DEEM PROPER, TO BE PAID BY THE COUNTY EXECU-
TIVE AND COUNTY COUNCIL. The deputy State's attorney and the
[eleven] eighteen full-time assistant State's attorneys, during their
terms of office shall not, except in connection with and in the perform-
ance of their duties as such deputy and assistant State's attorneys,
appear as counsel or represent any party professionally before any
court, magistrate, board, commission or agency of this State or any
county or political subdivision of this State. It is intended by the pro-
visions herein that the deputy State's attorney and the full-time
assistant State's attorneys shall not engage in the private practice
of law in any matter whatsoever.

(3)     The salary of the State's Attorney, the deputy State's attor-
ney and the assistant State's attorneys shall be paid in equal semi-
monthly installments.

(4)     The deputy State's attorney and the assistant State's attor-
neys shall perform such work as may be directed by the State's
Attorney, or as authorized by law, and under the direction of the
State's Attorney, may present cases to the grand juries, sign indict-
ments and criminal informations and perform such other acts and
duties in relation to the grand juries and in the operation of the
office as are necessary and proper.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That nothing in this Act shall
be construed or applied to affect the salary of the State's Attorney

for Prince George's County who is in office on the effective date of

this Act, for the remainder of the term in which he then is serving.

It is the legislative intent that the increased salary for the office of

State's Attorney of Prince George's County shall take effect as of

the beginning of the term of the person elected thereto at the general
election in the
month of November, 1972.
