No. 26
(House Joint Resolution 11)
House Joint Resolution requesting the Metropolitan Transit Author-
ity MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION to
grant reduced fare rates to retired persons sixty-five years of
age or older.
Inflation, as had been said so many times these days, is one of the
country's most severe problems.
It is also true that the segment of our population hardest hit by
inflation is that group of persons who are sixty-five years of age or
older, retired, and living on fixed incomes.
Many of the people in the retired group are having increasing
difficulty in keeping up with the expenses of daily living, due to the
erosion of buying power by the inflationary cycle.
One area of possible relief for these senior citizens would be the
granting of reduced fares DURING THE HOURS OF 10:00 A.M.
TO 3:00 P.M. on the bus system operated by the Metropolitan Transit
Authority MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
in the City of Baltimore and surrounding area; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the Metro-
politan Transit Authority MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION is requested to study the fare rate system
and, if possible, grant reduced fare rates to retired persons who are
sixty-five years of age or older; and, be it further
Resolved, That copies of this Resolution be sent to the members of
the Metropolitan Transit Authority and to its executive director
SECRETARY OF THE MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF TRANS-
PORTATION.
Approved May 6, 1971.
