AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 16 of
Article 32 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1967 Replacement
Volume), title "Dentistry," subtitle "In General," to regulate the
use of and manner of using1 professional and specialty designations.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 16 of Article 32 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1967 Replacement Volume), title "Dentistry" subtitle "In General,"
be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to
read as follows:
16.
Each person holding a license under this article may exhibit on
the outside door or the outside wall of the building or on the premises
wherein he shall practice dentistry, not more than two signs on
which shall be placed the name and [title (Dr., D.D.S., D.M.D.) or
degree of such person] any of the following professional designa-
tions: "Dr., Dentist, D.D.S., or D.M.D.", the letters of which shall
not exceed three inches square. The following designations shall be
unlawful: "Doctor of Dental Surgery, or Doctor of Dental Medicine,
or Dental Surgeon." The signs also may include a recognized A.D.A.
specialty designation (as prescribed by the American Dental Asso-
ciation) of any dentist who qualifies in accordance with specialty
qualification criteria established by the A.D.A. Any person practicing
dentistry in any building may exhibit such sign on the door of his
office in addition to those on the outside door or outside wall of the
building or ON THE premises of said property. No sign shall be
erected with neon or flashing lights. Illumination of any sign shall
be of an enclosed lamp design, nonflashing and containing no colored
illumination. A specialist, as defined by the American Dental Asso-
ciation, may insert in the classified section of a telephone directory a
designation of his specialty by including, immediately adjacent to or
below his name, the phrase "Practice limited to (name of specialty
as prescribed by the American Dental Association)." THE STATE
BOARD OF DENTAL EXAMINERS SHALL BE THE DEPOSI-
TORY AND ARBITRATOR OF THE ADA SPECIALTY QUALI-
FICATION CRITERIA.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1971.
