diately after Section 157M thereof and to be under the new sub-
title "Removal of Lead in Gasoline," to abate and eliminate SUB-
STANTIALLY lead in gasoline; to prohibit lead additives; to pro-
vide for the administration of this subtitle by the Gasoline Tax
Division of the Maryland Office of the Comptroller, to except
certain vehicles which cannot operate properly under the require-
ments of this subtitle, and to inspect and test gasoline for lead
content at establishments selling or distributing gasoline; to pro-
vide exceptions for racing vehicles; to limit the operation of this
subtitle to gasoline only; to provide the penalty of imprisonment
or fines, or both, when the provisions of this subtitle are violated;
to authorize the Attorney General to enjoin the operation of any
business, corporation or copartnership when the provisions of this
subtitle are violated; to provide for a message by the Governor to
the President of the United States encouraging him to direct the
automotive industry to seek an alternative to the internal com-
bustion engine.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That new Sections 157N through 157U, inclusive, be and they are
hereby added to Article 56 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1968
Replacement Volume and 1970 Supplement), title "Licenses," to
follow immediately after Section 157M thereof, to be under the new
subtitle "Removal of Lead in Gasoline," and to read as follows:
157N.
(a) After January 1, 1972, gasoline containing more than 1.0
grams of lead (tetraethyl lead) per gallon shall be sold or distributed
in this State except to specially registered vehicles meeting require-
ments set forth in this subtitle.
(b) After January 1, 1974, no gasoline containing more than 0.5
grams of lead (tetraethyl lead) per gallon shall be sold or distributed
in this State except to specially registered vehicles meeting require-
ments set forth in this subtitle.
(c) After January 1, 1975, no gasoline containing lead (tetra-
ethyl lead) shall be sold or distributed in this State except to spe-
cially registered vehicles meeting requirements set forth in this sub-
title.
(A) AFTER JANUARY 1, 1972 NO GASOLINE CONTAINING
MORE THAN 3.0 GRAMS OF LEAD PER GALLON SHALL BE
SOLD OR DISTRIBUTED IN THIS STATE.
(B) AFTER JANUARY 1, 1974 NO GASOLINE CONTAINING
MORE THAN 2.0 GRAMS OF LEAD PER GALLON SHALL BE
SOLD OR DISTRIBUTED IN THIS STATE.
(C) AFTER JANUARY 1, 1976 NO GASOLINE CONTAINING
MORE THAN 1.0 GRAMS OF LEAD PER GALLON SHALL BE
SOLD OR DISTRIBUTED IN THIS STATE.

It shall be unlawful to introduce additives containing tetraethyl
lead into gasoline after it is sold.
