Volume), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and Duties," to
increase the salary and discontinue the allowance for the Sheriff
of Somerset County, increase the salary of his chief deputy, in-
crease salary of the county jailer and make it total rather than
additional compensation; deleting jail matron; providing for equip-
ment and expenses; and making it mandatory that certain equip-
ment be used.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37(s) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1969 Replacement Volume), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Com-
pensation and Duties," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:

37.

(s) (1) The Sheriff of Somerset County shall receive an an-
nual salary of [four] seven thousand [two hundred] dollars
[$4,200.00,] $7,000.00 [and an annual allowance of one thousand
two hundred dollars ($1,200.00) for expenses] total compensation.
He shall appoint not less than two deputies, one of whom shall be
known as the chief deputy and shall receive an annual salary of
[three thousand dollars ($3,000.00)] five thousand five hundred
dollars ($5,500),
the second deputy shall receive an annual salary
of two thousand seven hundred dollars ($2,700.00). The Sheriff
may appoint such additional deputies at such compensation as may
be approved by the County Commissioners. The Sheriff or one of his
deputies shall act as county jailer and for that responsibility shall
receive annual total compensation [, in addition to his regular
salary,] in the amount of [fifteen hundred dollars ($1,500.00)]
six thousand dollars ($6,000.00). [The Sheriff shall appoint a jail
matron at an annual salary of six hundred dollars ($600.00).]

(2) The County Commissioners of Somerset County are hereby
authorized to provide the uniforms, radio equipment, automobiles
and operating expenses including, but not limited to, gasoline, oil,
insurance and repairs, office equipment and supplies, for the use of
the Sheriff's office for law enforcement at an annual cost not to ex-
ceed such amount as shall be prescribed in the budget by the County
Commissioners. The Sheriff and his deputies shall be uniformed
when acting in the capacity of Sheriff or deputy, and the automobile
used by them when acting as Sheriff or deputy shall be equipped
with a two-way radio.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the provisions of this Act
shall not be construed to extend or apply to the salary of the Sheriff
of Somerset County in office on the effective date of this Act, but
the provisions of this Act pertaining to such salary shall take effect
with the next term of office.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1970.
