158.

(j-1) In St. Mary's County the board shall appoint a clerk to
the board at a salary of not to exceed [$1,200] $1,800 per annum,
who shall have such duties as the board shall assign to him. The
Board of County Commissioners of the county shall assign such
other clerical assistants to the board as it may need to carry out
its duties. The duties of inspection under the alcoholic beverage
laws in the county shall be performed by the office of county inspector
under the direction of the alcoholic beverage board of the county.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1970.

CHAPTER 139
(Senate Bill 804)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 40 (i)
of Article 10 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1968 Replace-
ment Volume), title "Attorneys at Law and Attorneys in Fact,"
subtitle "State's Attorney," to increase the salary of the State's
Attorney and the assistant State's attorney of Charles County.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 40 (i) of Article 10 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1968 Replacement Volume), title "Attorneys at Law and At-
torneys in Fact," subtitle "State's Attorney," be and it is hereby re-
pealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

40.

(i) In Charles County, (1) the State's Attorney's salary is [ten
thousand dollars ($10,000)] fifteen thousand TWELVE THOU-
SAND dollars ($15,000). ($12,000). (2) The State's Attorney may
appoint an assistant State's Attorney and a secretary. The assistant
State's Attorney's salary is [seven thousand dollars ($7,000)] eight
thousand five hundred dollars ($8,500).
The assistant State's attor-
ney has the same legal powers as the State's Attorney to represent
the State before grand juries and in the trial of criminal proceedings.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the provisions of this
Act shall not be construed to extend or apply to the salaries of the
State's Attorney or assistant State's attorney in office on the effec-
tive date of this Act, but the provisions of this Act concerning the
salaries of the State's Attorney and Assistant State's attorney shall
take effect at the beginning of the next following term of office.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1970.
