Charter Amendment No. 69-1
A Resolution and Ordinance to repeal and re-enact with amend-
ments Section 6-5 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Prince George's
County, Maryland, (1963 Edition), titled, "Brentwood," and subtitled
"Same; election, terms, compensation," being a part of the Charter
of the Town of Brentwood, Maryland, and changing the terms of the
Councilmen from the Third Ward and Fourth Ward so as to make
all elective officers of the Town of Brentwood to run concurrently;
and to raise compensation of Councilmen from $20.00 a meeting to
$25.00 a meeting and to raise the compensation of Mayor from $40.00
a meeting to $45.00 a meeting.
Section 1. BE IT RESOLVED, ENACTED AND ORDAINED by the
Mayor and Town Council of Brentwood, Maryland, that Section 6-5 of the
Code of Public Local Laws of Prince George's County, Maryland, (1963
Edition), titled, "Brentwood," and subtitled "Same; election, terms, com-
pensation," being a part of the Charter of the Town of Brentwood, Mary-
land, be and the same is hereby repealed and re-enacted with amendments
to read as follows:
6-5. Same; Election, Terms, Compensation.
[At the election of officers held under this charter, the qualified
voters of the town shall elect a Mayor and Treasurer to serve the term of
two years and shall elect four Councilmen, one from each ward, to be
voted for by the qualified voters of each ward, two to serve for the term
of two years and two to serve for the term of one year. At the first meeting
the Mayor and Town Council shall designate the time to be served by each
Councilman. At each successive annual election the qualified voters of
each ward in which there is a vacancy shall elect a Councilman to serve
for the term of two years.]
An election of officers shall be held on the first Monday of May, 1969,
by the qualified voters of the town, who shall elect a Mayor, a Councilman
from the First Ward, a Councilman from the Second Ward, and a Treasurer,
all of whom shall serve for a term of two years. An election of officers
shall be held under this Charter on the first Monday of May, 1970, and
the qualified voters of the town shall elect a Councilman from the Third
Ward and a Councilman from the Fourth Ward, to serve for a period of
one year. An election of officers shall be held under this Charter on the
first Monday of May, 1971, and the qualified voters of the town shall elect
a Mayor, Treasurer, and a Councilman from each of the Wards of the
town, to serve for a term of two years. At each successive biennial
election the qualified voters of the town shall elect a Mayor and a Treasurer
at large and shall also elect a Councilman from each of the Wards of the
Town, by the voters residing in the wards. Elected officials serving at the
time of this charter amendment shall serve out the terms for which they
had been elected.
The Mayor and the Treasurer must continually reside in said Town,
and each Councilman in his respective ward during their term of office,
and the Mayor and Council shall receive compensation for their services
according to the number of regular meetings they attend, each Councilman
to receive not in excess of [twenty] twenty-five dollars for each regular
meeting attended and the Mayor to receive not in excess of [forty]
