Resolved, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the State
Roads Commission utilize all financial resources at its disposal, in-
cluding all Federal funds available for such purposes, to acquire
land for and construct rest areas at appropriate locations along and
adjacent to the Interstate and Primary Systems of Highways, and
be it further

Resolved, That the State Roads Commission direct its immediate
attention to constructing rest areas on the eastern and western
approach roads to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge at such locations as it
deems feasible and appropriate, and be it further

Resolved, That the State Roads Commission take such action as is
within its authority to expend such funds as are legally authorized
from any source whatsoever to acquire land for and construct a scenic
easement or overlook adjacent to the State Highway on both the
eastern and western shores of the Chesapeake Bay, and be it further

Resolved, That the State Roads Commission, with the assistance
of the Maryland Economic Development Commission, take the neces-
sary action to construct and maintain or cause to be constructed and
maintained attractive and distinctive rest area information centers
along and adjacent to the Interstate and Primary Systems of High-
ways AT FEDERAL-AID REST AREAS, for the purpose of dis-
seminating highway travel information, including weather, road,
and travel conditions, as well as advertise and promote tourist
attractions, recreational, cultural and historical facilities within the
State.

(Senate Joint Resolution 29)

Senate Joint Resolution proposing that the day of April 14 each
year be proclaimed by the Governor of Maryland as John Hanson
Day.

The members of the General Assembly of Maryland are proposing
to the Governor of this State that each year the day of April 14 be pro-
claimed as John Hanson Day, and the General Assembly is requesting
the Governor each year to make the necessary proclamation.

John Hanson was an American Revolutionary leader who was born
on April 14, 1715, and died on November 22, 1783. He was the first
president under the Articles of Confederation, and for this reason
frequently is called the first president of the United States.

Mr. Hanson's life has always been one of particular interest to resi-
dents of the State of Maryland, as he was born in Charles County in
this State. AT MULBERRY GROVE, A BEAUTIFUL COLONIAL
ESTATE OVERLOOKING PORT TOBACCO RIVER IN CHARLES
COUNTY, NEAR THE HISTORIC TOWN OF PORT TOBACCO.
He became a notable political leader in the State of Maryland, serv-
ing in the General Assembly from 1757 and upon many important
national committees during the beginnings and progress of the
