2072                             Joint Resolutions

issued shortly after the battle, and the Red Cross had its beginning
during the battle; and

Whereas, The present Park on the Battlefield Site encompasses
only 800 acres of the 1800 acres on which the battle was fought, and
the surrounding area is held in private hands, and some develop-
ment has already occurred. In the future, more intensive develop-
ment is expected, and if this occurs, Antietam's historic value will
be severely impaired; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the Mary-
land Congressional Delegation IS CONGRATULATED FOR ITS
EFFORTS ON BEHALF OF THE PRESERVATION OF THE
BATTLEFIELD AND is requested to introduce FURTHER legisla-
tion to protect, by land acquisition and scenic easement, the Antietam
National Battlefield Site; and be it further

Resolved, That copies of this Resolution be sent to the members
of Congress from Maryland.

No. 3
(House Joint Resolution 14)

House Joint Resolution requesting the Maryland Historical Trust to

consider the possibility of acquiring the Rodgers Tavern in Perry-

ville, Maryland.

Whereas, The Rodgers Tavern is an historic monument linked with
the early history of the Revolution and the Presidency of George
Washington; and

Whereas, This house, presently owned by the Society for the
Preservation of Maryland Antiquities and being restored by the
Friends of Rodgers Tavern, is in need of continued and substantial
renovation; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the Mary-
land Historical Trust is requested to consider the possibility of
acquiring the Rodgers Tavern in Perryville, Maryland; and
be it further

Resolved, That copies of this Resolution be sent to the Maryland
Historical Trust.

Approved April 15, 1970.

No. 4
(House Joint Resolution 17)

House Joint Resolution requesting the Governor to provide funds to

complete the restoration of the Constellation.

Whereas, the frigate Constellation has been partially restored to
its original state; and

Whereas, This is a unique historical attraction in Baltimore City,
having been built there in 1797 and having seen service in every
major conflict since then up to and including World War II; and
an educational center available to school children without charge;
and

Whereas, The value of such an attraction has been amply demon-
strated by the success of Old Ironsides in Massachusetts; now,
therefore, be it
