(d) The Sheriff of Calvert County shall receive an annual salary
of [$6,000] $7,000 and $2,500 for all expenses. The said Sheriff
shall appoint not more than four deputy sheriffs [three] to serve
at the pleasure of said Sheriff and under his direction, [and one to
serve under the direction of the State's Attorney's office.] Each
deputy sheriff shall receive an annual salary in the amount of [$5,-
000] $6,000 and an allowance for expenses in an annual amount of
$2,500. The deputy sheriffs appointed after April 14, 1967, shall be
between 22 and 48 years of age. They must, within six (6) months
of their appointment, take a course, of not less than two weeks
duration, of [police] Maryland State Police training, [or its equiva-
lent,] and thereafter take such course of training annually. The
deputy, sheriffs appointed at the time this subsection takes effect
shall be required to take [a] two-weeks Maryland State Police
training course in police work [or its equivalent,] before [March
31, 1968] December 31, 1971, and annually thereafter. In addition
to the salaries above set forth, the Sheriff and deputies shall be reim-
bursed for actual expenses incurred for trips outside the territorial
limits of Calvert County up to a sum not to exceed $15.00 per trip.
Hereafter, there shall be no honorary deputy sheriffs of Calvert
County and no one is authorized to carry badges, certificates or other
materials for the purpose of identifying the bearer as an honorary
deputy sheriff.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the provisions of this
Act shall not be construed to extend or apply to the salary of the
sheriff or deputies in office on the effective date of this Act, but the
provisions of this Act concerning the salary of the sheriff or
deputies shall take effect at the beginning of the next following term
of office.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1970.

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 34 (c) of
Article 101 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1969 Supple-
ment), title "Workmen's Compensation," subtitle "Application of
Article; Extra-Hazardous Employments," to PROVIDE THAT
THE COUNTY COUNCIL AND NOT THE COUNTY COMMIS-
SIONER SHALL allow compensation to volunteer firemen or to
their dependents in case of death OF SUCH FIREMEN in Kent
County and Howard County, and matters generally related thereto.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 34(c) of Article 101 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1969 Supplement), title "Workmen's Compensation," subtitle
