CHAPTER 450
(Senate Bill 418)

AN ACT to add new Section 71B to Article 89B of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1969 Replacement Volume), title "State Roads,"
subtitle "Duties and Powers," to follow immediately after Section
71A thereof, authorizing and directing the State Roads Commis-
sion to erect and maintain, within the rights-of-way of Interstate
highways, signs, displays and devices giving specific information
in the interest of the traveling public, as authorized by subsection
(f) of Section 131, Title 23, United States Code. AND GENER-
ALLY DEALING WITH THE INSTALLATION OF SUCH
SIGNS, DISPLAYS AND DEVICES.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 71B be and it is hereby added to Article 89B of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1969 Replacement Volume), title
"State Roads," subtitle "Duties and Powers," to follow immediately
after Section 71A thereof and to read as follows:

71B.

The State Roads Commission is authorized and directed to erect
and maintain, within the rights-of-way of the Interstate highway
system, signs, displays and devices giving specific information in
the interests of the traveling public, as authorized by subsection
(f) of Section 131, Title 23, United States Code, to the full extent
authorised and agreed to by the Secretary of Transportation of the

United States.
AND SUCH SIGNS, DISPLAYS AND DEVICES
SHALL CONFORM TO THE NATIONAL STANDARDS AND
CRITERIA FOR OFFICIAL HIGHWAY SIGNS WITHIN INTER-
STATE RIGHTS-OF-WAY AS PROMULGATED BY THE SEC-
RETARY OF TRANSPORTATION OF THE UNITED STATES.
THE STATE ROADS COMMISSION SHALL NOT PARTICIPATE
IN THE COST OF PROCURING AND INSTALLING THE BUSI-
NESS SIGNS AS DEFINED IN THE NATIONAL STANDARDS.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1970.
