This is no time to abandon the drive and the optimism and the imaginative creativity which has characterized this country. This is no time for timidity or doubt. I challenge the next Governor and all who hear my voice to join together to assure the dreams that all Black America has of becoming a full part and first-class citizen in this country, turning that dream into a reality. I nominate Clarence Mitchell Jr., to be Governor of Maryland. Thank you very much." Read and journalized. Mr. Mitchell then withdrew the nomination of Clarence Mitchell, Jr. There being no further nominations the Chairman announced that the Joint Session was ready to vote to fill the office of Governor. The Senate Reading Clerk proceeded to call the roll which resulted with the Hon. Marvin Mandel being elected Governor of Maryland to fill out the term of Spiro T. Agnew (resigned).
