the applicable schedule provided for teachers in subsection (b) for
schools with the following number of assistant teachers:

One assistant....................................................................    $ 400.00

Two to five assistants .....................................................        600.00

Six to nine assistants......................................................        900.00

Ten to nineteen assistants..................................................     1,200.00

Twenty to twenty-nine assistants....................................     1,500.00

Thirty to thirty-nine assistants........................................     2,500.00

Forty to forty-nine assistants............................................     2,800.00

Fifty or more assistants....................................................     3,100.00

And provided further that for the purposes of this subsection a
principal of a school with thirty or more assistants shall be employed
on a twelve-month basis. A principal of a school with twenty to
twenty-nine assistants may be employed on a twelve-month basis
and shall be paid $700 in excess of the schedule in this subsection.

(f)    Aides I and II.The salary of the position of aide I shall be
$2,700 and the salary of the position of aide II shall be $2,500.

(g)    Minimum salary upon entry into system of any political
subdivision.
Each teacher or principal who enters the public school
system of any political subdivision in Maryland shall receive a mini-
mum salary equal to that which is required to be paid hereunder
to a teacher or principal having equivalent experience and grade
of certificate who is already in the public school system of that
political subdivision.

(h) Payments in excess of schedules.The county board of edu-
cation of any county and the Board of School Commissioners of
Baltimore City may, in its discretion, pay to teachers and principals
annual salaries in excess of the salaries provided for in this section.

(i) Levy to meet schedule.The county commissioners of each
county and the mayor and city council of Baltimore shall levy suf-
ficient funds to meet the schedule of salaries herein established.

(j) Duty-free lunch periods for teachers.Every teacher in the
public elementary and public secondary schools in the counties and
in Baltimore City shall be provided with a duty-free lunch period
each regularly scheduled school day. The period shall extend for at
least thirty minutes, but where the pupils have a regular lunch period
of less than thirty minutes, the duty-free period shall coincide with
such regular period of less than thirty minutes* The board of educa-
tion in each county and the board of school commissioners in Balti-
more City may employ teacher aides for the purpose.
