AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 273 (a),
(b), (c) of Article 66½ of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1967
Replacement Volume), title "Motor Vehicles," subtitles "Operation
of Vehicles Upon Highways," providing an increase in the num-
ber of rear lamps that are required on every motor vehicle.
EXCEPT MOTORCYCLES.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 273 (a), (b), (c) of Article 66½ of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1967 Replacement Volume), title "Motor Vehicles,"
subtitle "Operation of Vehicles Upon Highways," be and it is hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:
273.
(a) Rear [lamp] lamps—Required. Every motor vehicle and
every vehicle which is being drawn at the end of a train of vehicles
shall be equipped with [a rear lamp,] two rear lamps, exhibiting
[a] red flight] lights plainly visible from a distance of 300 feet to
the rear. NOTWITHSTANDING THE PROVISIONS OF THIS
SECTION, MOTORCYCLES SHALL BE EQUIPPED WITH AT
LEAST ONE RED LIGHT PLAINLY VISIBLE FROM A DIS-
TANCE OF 300 FEET TO THE REAR.
(b) Same—Adequacy. Either such rear [lamp] OR lamps or a
separate lamp shall be so constructed and placed as to illuminate
with a white light the rear registration plate and render it clearly
legible from a distance of 25 feet to the rear. When the rear license
plate is illuminated by an electric lamp other than the required rear
[lamp] OR lamps, said two lamps shall be turned on or off only by
the same switch that controls the head lamps.
(c) Reflectors—On what vehicles required. Every vehicle, trailer,
or semitrailer, including devices moved by muscular power, here-
after operated on a highway shall carry at the rear, either as a part
of the rear [lamp] OR lamps or separately, a red reflector meeting
the requirements of this section.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
January 1, 1970.
