AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37(b)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replace-
ment Volume and 1967 Supplement), title "Sheriffs," subtitle
"Compensation and Duties," increasing in Anne Arundel County
the number of deputy sheriffs, increasing the allowance allotted
for salaries of the deputies and clerical assistance, and raising the
sheriff's salary.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37(b) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1964 Replacement Volume and 1967 Supplement), title "Sheriffs,"
subtitle "Compensation and Duties," be and it is hereby repealed and
re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:
37.
(b) The Sheriff of Anne Arundel County shall receive an annual
salary of [$7,500] $10,000 plus an expense allowance for his personal
expenses incidental to his duties of $2,500. In addition to his salary,
the Sheriff shall receive [$65,000] $80,000 annually to be used for
salaries of deputies and any clerical assistance he deems necessary.
The Sheriff of Anne Arundel County shall be entitled to appoint
such number of deputies, not less than [ten (10)] twelve (12) how-
ever, and any clerical assistance required by the duties of the office.
Nothing herein, however, shall be construed to prevent the Sheriff,
in case of emergency, from temporarily deputizing any able-bodied
citizen to assist him in carrying out the duties of his office. All depu-
ties shall be furnished with automobiles suitable for the performance
of their duties by the County Commissioners, at no expense to the
deputies.
The payment of the compensation and expenses provided for herein
shall be made from the general funds of Anne Arundel County, in the
same manner as other general county disbursements are made.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the provisions of this Act
increasing the Sheriff's salary shall not be construed to extend or
apply to the sheriff in office on the effective date of this Act, but the
provisions of this Act increasing such salary shall take effect with the
next term of office.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1968.
