of Cecil County to appoint four additional deputies and specifying
the rate of compensation to be paid them, increasing the salary
of the present deputies, authorizing and directing the County
Commissioners to furnish and maintain automobiles for the
Sheriff and deputies, and relating generally to the compensation
and duties of sheriffs and deputy sheriffs in Cecil County.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37(g) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1964 Replacement Volume and 1967 Supplement), title "Sheriffs,"
subtitle "Compensation and Duties," be and it is hereby repealed
and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

37.

(g) Commencing with the beginning of the next term of office,
the Sheriff of Cecil County shall receive an annual salary of $6,500
and no allowance for expenses except as hereinafter provided. The
Sheriff shall appoint [four] eight deputy sheriffs, one of whom he
shall name as chief deputy. The salary of the chief deputy shall be
[$4,500.00] $5,900.00 annually with annual increments, subject to
approval of the Sheriff of $200.00, subject to a maximum annual
salary of [$5,300] $6,900.00. The remaining [three] seven deputies
shall receive annual salaries of [$4,200.00] $5,600.00 each with
annual increments, subject to the approval of the Sheriff of $200.00,
subject to a maximum annual salary of [$5,000.00] $6,600.00. The

Sheriffs and all deputies shall be furnished, prior to July 1, 1970,

with automobiles suitable for the performance of their duties by
the County Commissioners, at no expense to the Sheriff and deputies.
THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE SHALL BE FURNISHED BY THE
COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WITH FOUR AUTOMOBILES, TWO
OF THEM TO BE FURNISHED BY JULY 1, 1968, AND TWO
MORE BY JULY 1, 1969. The County Commissioners shall pay
all necessary operating expenses, including but not limited to, gaso-
line, oil, insurance and repairs.,
AND SHALL REPLACE THESE
AUTOMOBILES WITH NEW ONES AT LEAST ONCE EVERY
TWO YEARS. The deputy sheriffs shall perform all the duties hereto-
fore performed by the constables to the trial magistrates' courts of
Cecil County. From and after the appointment of one or more of such
deputy sheriffs, any references to constables, as applied to Cecil
County, in any law shall be construed to apply to deputy sheriffs.
The Sheriff and deputy sheriffs shall be entitled to an expense
allowance for travel at the rate of ten cents (10¢) per mile actually
traveled, to be paid monthly upon vouchers submitted by the Sheriff
to the County Commissioners of Cecil County in such form as they
may specify, provided that he shall also submit with
such vouchers an affidavit sworn to by him upon personal knowledge
showing for each day of the month just passed the number of miles
each vehicle used by him and his deputies has been driven in the
performance of the duties of his or their office, as determined by
him from a daily check of the speedometer readings of the respective
vehicles [.], except such mileage allowance shall not be allowed
in the event automobiles are furnished to the Sheriff and deputies
by the County Commissioners.
The Sheriff's office shall also receive
an appropriation of $1,500, to be used for special investigations
and employees, subject to the approval of the County Commissioners.
