or any officer or employee solely, exclusively and regularly employed
by any of the foregoing; nor to any attorney or counsellor at law in
connection with the regular practice of his profession, nor to any
person employed regularly as a full-time or part-time employee by
any such attorney or counsellor at law when engaged upon his em-
ployer's business; nor to any employee, investigator or investiga-
tors solely, exclusively and regularly employed by any person, firm,
association or corporation which is not engaged in any of the busi-
nesses hereinbefore described in items numbered one to nine, both
inclusive, of this subsection insofar as their acts may relate solely
to the business of their respective employers; nor to any person,
firm, association or corporation licensed to do a business of insurance
of any nature under the insurance laws of this State, nor to any
employee or licensed agent thereof; nor to any person, firm, asso-
ciation or corporation conducting any investigation solely for its
own account; nor to any special police officers appointed under the
provisions of Sections 342 to 348, inclusive, of Article 23 of this Code,
or Section 558 of Article 4 of the Code of Public Laws (1949 Edition).

(b) The terms "the business of detective agency," "the business
of investigator," "the business of watch, guard or patrol agency"
shall mean any person, firm, association or corporation engaged in the
private detective business as defined in subsection (a) of this section,
who employs one or more persons in conducting such business, but
shall not include any person, firm or association or corporation en-
gaged exclusively in the business of making shopping surveys and
shall not include any person, firm, association or corporation engaged
exclusively in the business of owning, or operating or maintaining
a pier or shipwatching service.

76. License to Conduct Business; Licensees of Other States; Li-
censes Not To Be Issued Under Certain Circumstances.

(a)  No person, firm, association or corporation shall engage in
the private detective business or as a private detective or investigator
or advertise his or its business to be a private detective business or
that of a detective agency or investigator without having first
obtained from the Superintendent a license to conduct such business,
as hereinafter provided. Application for such license shall be made
to the Superintendent of State Police.

(b)  No person, firm, association or corporation domiciled, resi-
dent, incorporated, or licensed as a private detective, business or
investigator, under the laws of any other state of the United States
or of any foreign country, may conduct or solicit business for, a
private detective business, or the business of a private detective or
private investigator, within this State until and unless they shall
first have applied for and obtained from the Superintendent a license
as provided for in this subtitle and shall first become subject to all
the provisions of this subtitle.

(c)  Every nonresident applicant shall file a consent with the
Secretary of State that suits and actions may be commenced against
such applicant in the proper court of any county of this State in
which a cause of action may arise on which the plaintiff may reside,
by the service of any process or pleading authorized by the laws of
this State on the Secretary of State, each such nonresident appli-
cant shall stipulate and agree in such consent that such service of
