CHAPTER 344
(House Bill 981)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sections 57, 58,
61, 61A, and 62 of Article 17 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1966 Replacement Volume), title "Clerks of Court," subtitle
"Clerks of Circuit Courts and Superior Court of Baltimore City";
to repeal Sections 9, 10, 15 through 17, inclusive, 51, and 52 of
Article 54 of said Code (1964 Replacement Volume), title "Land
Office"; to repeal Section 132 of Article 41 of said Code (1965
Replacement Volume), title "Executive and Administrative
Departments," subtitle "1. The Executive Department," subhead-
ing "Commissioner of the Land Office"; to repeal and re-enact,
with amendments, Sections 172 and 175 of said Article, title and
subtitle, subheading "Hall of Records Commission"; to recodify
Sections 171 through 181, inclusive, of said Article 41 (as said
Sections 172 and 175 are herein amended) as, respectively, Sections
1 through 11, inclusive, of Article 54 of said Code (1964 Replace-
ment Volume); to renumber Sections 1 through 8, 11 through 14,
18 through 46A, and 47 through 50, all inclusive, of said Article 54,
as respectively Sections 12 through 45 57 thereof, to follow immedi-
ately after the sections recodified and to be under the new subtitle
"Land Patents"; and to change the title of said Article 54 from
"Land Office" to "Hall of Records"; in order to consolidate and
clarify provisions of the law relating to the custody and mainte-
nance of certain public and historic records and the functions of
the Hall of Records Commission and the Archivist appointed by
it in relation thereto; to correct superseded references to the Com-
missioner of the Land Office, now abolished; to repeal obsolete
provisions for the keeping of records under practices heretofore
abandoned; and relating generally to the definition of certain
duties imposed upon the Hall of Records Commission and Archivist
subsequent to the abolition of the office of Commissioner of the
Land Office by vote of the people at the general election of
November 8, 1966, and the operation of Chapter 488 of the Acts
of 1966.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 57, 58, 61, 61A, and 62 of Article 17 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1966 Replacement Volume), title "Clerks of
Court," subtitle "Clerks of Circuit Courts and Superior Court of
Baltimore City," be and they are hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:

57.

Every clerk, after he records any deed, mortgage, release of
mortgage, or lease of real estate shall make or have made a 35 mm.
microfilm picture or copy of every such record and transmit said
