who displays on his vehicles the motor carrier's name and the permit
number issued by the Interstate Commerce Commission in accord-
ance with Federal regulations, may register his entire fleet of
vehicles for an annual fee of $5.00.

(b)  A motor carrier not subject to regulation by the Interstate
Commerce Commission, and who has for the immediately prior full
registration year complied with the provisions of the Road Tax on
Motor Carriers Act and with the rules and regulations promulgated
by the Comptroller for its effective enforcement and administration,
and who displays on his vehicles the motor carrier's name and a
permanent Maryland number to be issued by the Comptroller upon
request and displayed in the manner to be prescribed by regulations
promulgated by the Comptroller, may register his entire fleet of
vehicles for an annual sum of $5.00.

(c)  In the case of all other motor carriers the Comptroller shall
provide cm identification marker to be issued to each motor vehicle
operated by such motor carrier. Such identification marker must
be displayed in accordance with the regulations promulgated by the
Comptroller. The identification marker shall remain the property of
the State of Maryland and may be recalled for any violation of the
provisions of this subtitle or of the regulations promulgated there-
under. The fee for issuance of such identification marker shall be
$1.00 per vehicle.

(d)  The registration of motor vehicle fleets as provided in sub-
sections (a) and (b) above, may be rescinded by the Comptroller for
any violation of the provisions of this subtitle or of the regulations
promulgated thereunder, and in such case the motor carrier shall be
required to obtain identification markers for each individual vehicle
in accordance with the regulations promulgated by the Comptroller.

(e)  A vehicle shall not be considered in violation of the provisions
of this section until April 15 of each year, provided that the motor
carrier was registered in accordance with the provisions of sub-
sections (a), (b) and (c) above during the preceding registration
year.

424. COOPERATION

Each agency of this state shall cooperate with the Gasoline Tax
Division by making available to it, upon request, such records and
information in its possession as may be of assistance in the adminis-
tration and enforcement of this Act.

425. EXEMPTIONS FROM ACT

Nothing in this Act shall apply to any commercial vehicle or ve-
hicles operated by this state or any subdivision thereof, the United
States or any agency of two or more states or of states and the
United States in which this state participates, or to any school bus
as defined by the laws of this state operated by, for or on behalf of
a state, any subdivision thereof, or any private or privately operated
school or schools.

426. ENFORCEMENT

(a) The Department of Maryland State Police is hereby author-
ized and directed to assist in the enforcement of the provisions of
this subtitle.
