or actions so assigned, or fails or neglects to provide an adequate
defense or otherwise fails to act in the public interest in handling
assignments, it may, not less than thirty days after written notice
to the principal office of such insurer, designate an adjuster, adjust
ment company, or
attorney, to make the investigation at the insurer's
expense, and also designate an attorney to conduct such defense at

the insurer's expense.
ALTERNATE INSURANCE COMPANY
FROM THE UNSATISFIED CLAIM AND JUDGMENT FUND'S
REGULAR INSURANCE COMPANY ASSIGNMENT LIST TO
MAKE THE INVESTIGATION AND ALSO DESIGNATE AN
ATTORNEY TO CONDUCT SUCH DEFENSE, ALL AT THE
EXPENSE OF THE FIRST DESIGNATED INSURER. Upon mak-
ing such designation, the Board shall notify the
FIRST DESIG-
NATED insurer as to the name and address of the attorney, adjust-
ment company or adjuster,
ALTERNATE INSURER AND ATTOR-
NEY, and shall advise the FIRST DESIGNATED insurer that such
investigation and defense will be made at the expense of the
FIRST
DESIGNATED insurer. A copy of this notice shall also be mailed to
the State Insurance Department.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1967.

CHAPTER 449

(Senate Bill 222)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 32 (f) of
Article 66˝ of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1966 Supple-
ment), title "Motor Vehicles", subtitle "Administration—Regis-
tration—Titling", to repeal the special fee charged members of
Veterans of Foreign Wars for special motor vehicle registration
plates.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 32 (f) of Article 66˝ of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1966 Supplement), title "Motor Vehicles", subtitle "Adminis-
tration—Registration—Titling", be and it is hereby repealed and
re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

32.

(f) Upon application to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles by
the owner of any registered passenger motor vehicle, accompanied
with due proof that said owner is a bona fide member of the Depart-
ment of Maryland, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States,
and also upon certification to the Department of Motor Vehicles by
the department commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, State
of Maryland, in office at the time of said application that clearance
has been made through his office and said request is not in excess of
the number of tags which the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles may
determine can be manufactured in conformity with the combinations
permissible under this article, and upon payment of [a fee of $.50 in
