(House Bill 628)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 51 (j)
of Article 25 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1965 Supple-
ment), title "County Commissioners," subtitle "County Treasur-
ers;" and to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37
(k) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1965 Sup-
plement), title "Sheriff," subtitle "Compensation and Duties," AND
TO REPEAL SECTION 101 OF THE CODE OF PUBLIC LOCAL
LAWS OF GARRETT COUNTY (1957 EDITION, BEING AR-
TICLE 12 OF THE CODE OF PUBLIC LOCAL LAWS OF
MARYLAND), TITLE "GARRETT COUNTY," SUBTITLE
"COUNTY TREASURER" to increase the salaries of the County
Treasurer and Sheriff of Garrett County AND TO REPEAL AN
OBSOLETE LAW GENERALLY PROVIDING FOR PAYMENT
TO THE TREASURER OF A PORTION OF TAX MONIES AND
FOR THE OPERATION OF HIS OFFICE.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 51 (j) of Article 25 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1965 Supplement), title "County Commissioners," subtitle
"County Treasurers," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:

51.

(j) The county treasurer of Garrett County shall receive an
annual salary of [$4,500.00] $5,000 $5,500 out of which he shall pay
the expenses of his office to the extent that they are not otherwise
specifically provided for by law. Subject to the approval of the County
Commissioners, the county treasurer shall appoint a deputy treas-
urer.

The deputy treasurer shall not be related to the county treasurer
by blood or marriage, and before entering upon his duties shall
execute a bond as required by the Public Local Laws of Garrett
County. The deputy treasurer shall have a thorough knowledge of
bookkeeping and related subjects, and the duties of the deputy
treasurer shall be prescribed by the county treasurer. The deputy
treasurer shall receive an annual salary from the County Commis-
sioners not to exceed $3,000.00 which is to be paid in equal monthly
installments.

The County Commissioners shall allow said treasurer $400.00 an-
nually for the expense of secretarial services in making out tax bills.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That Section 37 (k) of Article
87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1965 Supplement), title
