572                               LAWS OF MARYLAND                      [CH. 290

MOTOR vehicles be equipped with signal lamps or devices and
a device to allow the operator to flash the two front and the two
rear signals simultaneously, and that such device be used when
the vehicle is disabled or stopped on a public highway.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 280 287(C) of Article 66½ of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1957 Edition) (1965 SUPPLEMENT), title "Motor Ve-
hicles," subtitle "Operation of Vehicles upon Highways," be and it
is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, and that new
Section 280A be and it is hereby added to said Article 66½, to
follow

immediately after Section 280 thereof, and both sections to read as

follows: WITH AMENDMENTS, TO READ AS FOLLOWS:

280.

(a [Any] Every motor vehicle registered in this State and

manufactured or assembled after January 30, 1967 and designated

as a 1968 or subsequent year model, [may] shall be equipped with

[and when a] signal lamps or device [lamp or device is required

under this article shall be equipped with a signal lamp or signal

device] which [is] are so constructed and located on the vehicle as

to give a signal of intention to stop which shall be red or amber

color and signals of intention to turn to the right or left, all of which
signals shall be plainly visible and understandable in normal sunlight

and at night from a distance of 100 feet to the front and rear but

shall not project a glaring or dazzling light. There must be at least

two front and two rear turn signal lamps or devices. Stop signals

need be visible only from the rear except in the case of school buses

provided for in Section 257 of this article.

(b) All mechanical signal devices shall be self illuminated when
in use at the time mentioned in Section 271.

280A.

Every motor vehicle required by Section 280 to be equipped with

signal lamps and devices, shall be equipped with a device, approved
by the Commissioner, by means of which the operator may cause the

a traffic hazard warning when such vehicle is disabled or stopped on
a public highway. It shall be unlawful to fail to cause such directional
signals to flash simultaneously when a
motor vehicle is disabled or
stopped on a public highway in this State, except that it shall not be
unlawful to fail to
flash such directional signals simultaneously when
two front and two rear directional signals to flash simultaneously as

a vehicle is stopped at a necessary traffic control device.

287.

(C) FLASHING LIGHTS ARE PROHIBITED ON MOTOR
VEHICLES, EXCEPT AS A MEANS OF INDICATING A RIGHT
OR LEFT TURN, AND EXCEPT AS AUTHORIZED BY SECTION
287A HEREIN, BUT THIS SECTION SHALL NOT APPLY TO
AUTHORIZED EMERGENCY VEHICLES. PROVIDED, THAT
VEHICLES WHICH ARE SO EQUIPPED MAY FLASH BOTH
FRONT AND REAR TURN SIGNALS SIMULTANEOUSLY AS A
VEHICULAR TRAFFIC HAZARD WHENEVER SUCH VEHICLE
